Download RingDroid from the Marketplace. You can use this program to edit music clips and save them as Notification alerts as well as contacts that are synced with Google (read: not saved in the internal phone book).

Yeah my contacts were "copied" from my SIM to the phone too as well as being linked with my gmail address'.

If it's a contact u added from the phone just go to contacts and hold and click on the persons name. Hit edit and scroll down to ringtone. Your custom ringtones should show up. If it's a a google contact or any other I can't help u. Best thing to do is name a new contact from the phone.
