Help Contact Ringtones

Having issues with contact specific ringtones. Some work and some don't. Does it matter if the number is programmed in as XXX-XXX-XXXX or (XXX) XXX-XXXX or XXXXXXXXXX?? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

What kind of issues? I have about 5 custom ringtones assigned, not running into any issues. All of them are .ogg files.

Issues are that sometimes the contact ringer will be the default, and other times it will be the specific one I have set up. I can't pinpoint any reason why it would do this. I tried taking out all of the dashes from the numbers, and setting up the media file on my sd card. When the contact calls, the photo that I have set for them shows, but te ringer is the default.

What is the format of the custom ringtones? and what is your directory structure on the SD card?

For ringtones / notification / alarms (custom) I use all .ogg files; if you use .mp3, it will work but then they also get tagged in the music player. You can use an online tool to convert files if you need to.

Also, the directory structure I use is below.

/sdcard/Media/Alarms
/sdcard/Media/Notifications
/sdcard/Media/Ringtones

Sorry, I can't seem to replicate your issue..

Mine are all .mp3 file names. Mine are in sdcard/media/audio/ringtones.

Do you think that makes a difference?

Probably, I would change your directory structure to match what I have. Then if you want, I'd also convert your .mp3's to .ogg's using this online tool. Load up your file or files, and convert, don't have to change any of the settings. Once your file is done, download into the /sdcard/media/ringtones folder, then apply ringtone to contact as needed. Hope this helps ya.

So this still isn't working. I use the feature so I can tell who is calling w/o having to read the phone number and contact first. Sometimes the ringtone works and sometimes it doesn't. I have set them up correctly, and can't understand what else I can do to make these work??

Not sure if this helps or not, but what I ended up doing, was the following:

I have a folder on the SD card called "Music" (where I naturally have stored a variety of .mp3 files - about 3 GB atm).

From the Sense Home screen, I hit Menu, and then hit Ringtones. Click on new Ringtone at the top, and pick a song to use as a ring tone, hit Apply. Then, I can go into the person's contact card, and hit the Ringtone option, and the song should now be listed in the ringtone list. At first, I didn't realize it was listed, since it is all "stock" looking, but they were in there. I just tested it out, and worked flawlessly to have it's custom tone played.

That said, I don't know if it matters how it's set up in your list. I originally had my home number saved in XXXXXXXXXX format, and then changed it to XXX-XXX-XXXX and it worked fine both ways.

(reading back up, I hadn't thought about the .mp3 files getting added to the music player. I only have full songs atm, no custom sounds made, so it hasn't been an issue...I'll have to remember to convert if I do that for alerts and such)

Just got around to assigning custom ringtones the other day. Like the OP, sometimes they work fine and sometimes it goes go my default ringtone (which is in the same ringtone folder on my SD card) . All ringtones are 30sec mp3 on SD card.

Never had a problem with the same setup on my Incredible.

I have my folder structure identical to yours.

I've had the same issue as the OP with all of my Droid phones, though. It's random and doesn't happen often, but sometimes the default ringtone will play instead of the assigned one.

I have exactly the same issue as Dobieg. I have a contact with contact-specific ringtone assigned. This is a contact from google account, not from phone memory. Most of time when it calls, phone plays contact-specific ringtone, but sometimes it plays default ringtone. I believe this is and Android issue, but maybe not. I have Samsung Galaxy Gio with Andriod 2.3.3.
