Contact show in SMS but not in "Contacts"

I've had this phone for month or so and I think it's the best phone I've ever had. One thing that has been bothering me is the contacts can be somewhat of a hassle on Android phones.
My problem is that I found out that I was missing a friends number, so I looked him up on the yellow pages and found his phone no. I started a text message and just started to type in the number (was going to save his number later) but after 2 digits my friends name came up as a suggestion. But when I look in my Contacts he is no where to be seen, and if I want to call him and start typing his number in he does not come up?! So what am I missing/doing wrong?

Cheers.

Your contacts list is probably set to view phone contacts only
The search has probably detected your friend's number on your SIM card

Go to Contacts -> menu (left button-next to home) -> More -> Display Options

There play with the options, usually I would suggest to have ur contacts in ur sim or phone. Also check the synchronization settings there.
Tweak the options and his number and name will appear :-)

I hope I helped.

Yeah that's what I was thinking but I just checked my SIM and he's not even listed there.

Thanks but I tried that already with no success. It's set to show contacts with a phone number only and every option under phone is set to on.

Edit: I found out that if I set it to show my contacts in the google optiopn, he comes up. Wierd.
