Contact sync gets "stuck"

I am on stock unrooted v4.1.2 (VZW) and am having trouble with my contact sync. It looks like the last time it successfully synched was about 4 months ago (I don't change contacts that often).

I have tried disabling contact sync, rebooting, doing a clean sync on everything else and then re-enabling contact sync. Unfortunately it starts to sync and then just seems to hang there.

I have multiple accounts on my phone and this is the only one configured to sync contacts because it is my primary account.

Does anyone have thoughts on how to fix this short of deleting & re-adding this account or a factory reset. I'd like to avoid either of these because it would likely mess up my Google Music account and other installed apps tied to this account.

TIA.

When this happened on my Note 2 I had to remove/add my Google acct. Contact sync was checked but hadn't synced in months unbeknownst to me.

yes, this is what appears to be happening. I have attached a screenshot from this morning.

Yeah and re-adding the account wont cause any problems i dont think

My big concern is that Google Music only allows a certain number of devices on the account and only a certain number of devices to be deleted per year. I had been playing with ROM's on a different device and without thinking about it, I think I have hit both of those limits. Which would mean I could get locked out of my google music account on my primary device. That would be a real bummer if that happened.

I guess I will have to bite the bullet and try deleting and re-adding this google account to see if it will reset whatever is getting hung up on the device.
