Help Contact Sync with GMail

Now, my Gmail will sync any contacts I have personally inputed on the Gmail website, but for some reason whenever I add a new contact, the new contact does not sync to my Gmail on the website. It stays as a Phone Contact, rather than 'Google' and therefore if I lose my phone or need a new one, I will lose that contact and his/her phone number, e-mail, etc.

I've given up on the Facebook sync because that's extremely worthless with the 2.2 update, and I will not do Verizon's Backup Assistant because that's just a pain

Is there something I need to do extra whenever adding a contact on my Droid X?

I am having the exact same problem.. any solutions yet to this?

I always just assumed my "phone contacts" would automatically sync with gmail but this doesn't seem to be happening..

You have to manually put them in as gmail contacts, there's no way to simply switch them.
