Contacts and groups - mismatch between gMail and Android

Hopefully a quickie.

I have a number of contacts on gMail, which sync very nicely to my Desire.

Snag is that the 'groups' these contacts are in doesn't sync. I can look at a contact on gMail, and on Android, and that contact is in different groups on both systems. Despite them being (supposedly) 'Sync'd'.

What's wrong? And what can I do to put it right?

(Desire is running standard 2.1, with an unbranded but standard ROM - it's not rooted.)

I hope that issues gets resolved, as I've seen it come and go and ended up having to just forget about groups in Gmail altogether.

I even started using a different email app in my device for my Gmail account, moving away from the Gmail app because it was constantly in need of cache and data refreshing just to function reliably.

I guess I'm a little mad at Google, such a huge outfit but with ongoing little things like this.
