Help contacts backup to gmail Wont sync

Hi one and all I'm trying to backup my contact to my google account but am having a bit of an issue. I have root acces to my htc desire but have not yet flashed a new ROM as I need to make the backups first

here is what I have done thus far

1. exported all files to sd card
2. imported all as google account
3. selected veiw all
4. settings----account and sync----sync google contacts
5. aaaaaaaaaand nothing happens

I log into google and there is nothing there so something must be preventing the sync. The little sync icon is white but does not go green and sync?


Any ideas peeps. Could I remove google from my phone and add it again? or is it that the internal memory is limited as I have experienced probs with gmail syncing as my internal memory is locked up

right sort of answered myself there, after removing a few phone stored apps I was able to run the sync. Google is only showing 50 contacts and it should be in the 100's to be fair. any tip to make sure they all sync?

now getting a force close error when I try to import the file under the google account. There are 1012 contacts to import but it gets to about 25 and then force closes
