Help contacts changing

Okay so i got a samsung galaxy s captivate from rogers... I have been adding many people to my contacts and for some i forgot to put the area code so i went back and changed it. Now when i text then it enters the right phone number but after i send a text to them it changes to the first phonr number i entered without the area code. I have tried restarting my phone and even deleting the contact and making a new one.. For some reason even with a new contact with the same number it goes back to the old number without area codes so the text message failes when i try to send it.. Pleasr help

Where are your contacts stored?
All my contacts are gmail contacts, and I've not had this problem.
I'm on rogers too btw.
