Help Contacts in Gmail

Hi
I have a Motorola Droid X. I am tryiny to sync my contacts with my phone. Everything works fine untill I try to add a new group (personal, work, etc). As long as the contacts are in my contacts everything syncs fine. when I put contacts in those groups that I created they never show up on my phone. Is there a setting I am missing? In gmail or phone.
