Contacts lost

My friend had a frequent shut down issue with his galaxy s2. So after a few unsuccessful attempts to solve that, I decided to resort to factory reset. I did 'merge with Google' inside the contacts. Then after connecting to pc, I selected all the files (ctrl+a) from the phone and pasted it on a safe location in the computer hard disk. Then I did the factory reset. Then set up the gmail account to which the contacts were synced earlier and synced with contracts.... but found only a few (23) contacts. Earlier there were more than 100 contacts.what happened to my contacts. ? What is happening when contacts in an android phone are synced with gmail.? - contacts of phone are replaced with contacts in Gmail or the other way round? Or gmail gets the contacts from phone in addition to what it has and phone gets the contacts from Gmail in addition to what it has?. Plz clarify. Also I would appreciate any help in restoring my contacts from the wholesome backup I did in the beginning.

When you check the contacts using a PC (via the Gmail website) are there all 100+ or only 23?

Also, be more specific about just what files you copied with 'Ctrl+a'.

X2, check the contacts online, if they are there then it may be a minor sync issue.

You can also export the google contacts to CSV or Vcard and import them into the phone that way.

When I checked the contacts in Gmail via desktop pc, I see only 23 contacts. Answer to the second part - I connected the phone to pc and opened phone from my computer & selected the entire thing and pasted to another drive in my pc

What you did when you copied files did not include your contacts. You should have created a backup of all contacts by using a backup utility such as MyBackup or Helium, or exporting them as a vcf file.

Unfortunately, it's likely you have lost all but 23 contacts.

Hmmmm

Now I wish somebody could clear my last doubt "What is happening when contacts in an android phone are synced with gmail.? - contacts of phone are replaced with contacts in Gmail or the other way round? You may have had the phone set to view a contact source on the phone that did not actually have the contacts when you triggered the Google merge. On T-Mobile I have a few contact sources like phone, T-Mobile sync,Google, and SIM.

When you trigger a merge it may not happen right away as well, only way to make sure is log into Google contacts via a web browser and verify they synced.
