Root Contacts not showing in Google

A buddy asked me to root his Evo and I was going through the motions of pulling his pictures and checking his contacts. I logged into his Google account and there are no contacts there. All the sync permissions are set correctly and the phone shows the sync was done one hour prior and of course I tried it manually, but still no contacts. I've never seen this issue before and was hoping I was missing something obvious. I even created a new gmail account just to see if that would work, but it didn't. Perhaps I'm missing something on the Google side, but beats me what it is.

Are his contacts really in his google account or are they saved to his phone memory?

The phone was set up correctly, but after playing with import/export they are now
So all is peachy? Some people save contacts to phone instead of google and when phone gets wiped, so do contacts.
hope I followed your question correctly...
Where were his contacts? on sd card?

I'll just pull them off the card as a vcf file and upload them manually to Google. It just bugs me when things you take for granted trip you up.

I never tried to import contacts from the sd card, but when you try to import, does it give you the option to import to phone memory or google?

The export function under the phones contacts will place them on the sd card as a VCF file. All you need to do then is transfer the file over to a pc and upload it via gmail to Google.
