Help Contacts not showing up in Gmail

I synced my contacts with gmail but nothing shows up on gmail. I think its because I transfered my contacts to the Epic from a Palm Centro via bluetooth, and the contacts are not technically "google" contacts and so it doesn't sync.
How do I go about changing all the phone contacts so it should be recognized as google contacts and it should sync with gmail??

Before you do this, backup the contacts on your phone and your contacts on google.

Now, on the phone, go to settings, accounts and sync. Tap on your google account, and check all of the categories that display in which you have conacts. Then go back and tap on the "Phone" account, and check all categories in which you have contacts. sync now. it should work. if you end up with duplicates (this happened to me) you can use google's "find and merge duplicates" funtion.
