Help contacts overflow from gmail account

can anyone help with this? it ported all of my gmail contacts from years and they pop up as suggestions when i try to sms or use other apps that search for contacts...this is incredibly annoying and i really hope i don't have to wipe my phone to fix it.
is there any other way?

uncheck google contact sync n then hit sync again

that does not get rid of all the contacts that it synced before

Within Gmail, click Contacts and then on the right side, scroll down to find duplicate contacts. That is your first step in cleanup.

On the main screen, "My Contacts" is what you get to your phone. Do all of your cleanup in the web interface, much quicker than trying to do it all on the phone.

O now I remember I just went to my googke contacts online deleted them all them hitsync on the phone
