Help Contacts Storage > 27MB!!

I somewhat have an indirect solution to your problem.. I posted a similar question to this over at the EVO 4g forum...

The reason why your contact storage is reaching so high is because of GOOGLE's (Not facebook, outlook, etc) syncing! I found out some of my contacts were duplicated cuz Google somehow synced Contacts that were already saved on my phone from GM AIL... Some contacts had up to 6 duplicates!

Thanks for the suggestion, but don't think thats the reason for the excessive folder size. The first thing I did was to check for duplicates, and there were hardly any. Anyway, I trimmed down my google contact list now and its down to 14MB for a total of around 600 contacts (including fb).

According to my Desire I have 7meg left. I was shocked because my phone is rooted and have apps2sd installed. I checked to see what was using all the space and found that my 120 contacts were using around 128 mb!! I still have no idea why this is. If anyone hears any solutions for this, please let me know

I had 98mb and it was kling me, I went into app manager and cleared the data, this got rid of all my pics that ere linked to fb an my contacts . But hey it worked, I am not going to link to fb until froyo appears. So for now I have to live without pics on my contacts

To help a few people, if you want to turn gmail.auto updates off or show certain contacts etc then just click the menu and view when on the contacts bit.

Here is something that puzzles me, how come my contacts that I imported from my card from my other phone are now set as google I have 818 numbers in Google account, and 0 in phone. Why? And how? As I never used Google for anything besides email, I don't use Google chat or anything. I hope someone can help me .

Thanks for the reply. If I clear the data I obviously lose all my contacts. The vast majority of which are my FB contacts. The only way to sort this you think is to clear my contacts, and add every contact in manually? I'm obviously not going to do this lightly as there are people out there with 300+ Facebook contacts with pics who have 8mb contact lists. Anyone else out there with suggestions before I make this drastic move?

This is really annoying me as well. I have 21mb of contacts and 14mb for the facebook app. Do I need the facebook app as well as "facebook for htc sense"? The latter is only 400kb, so I would love to delete the 14mb app if I could as currently my phone is full and I cannot download any more apps - which is a bit of a joke to be honest. I need apps2sd ASAP!

Can you clear out the facebook and the contacts storage thing without losing all information?

I actually have a slide, but have the same question. Can we clear the data and let it resync, hopefully with a smaller file size? I have a bunch of facebook contacts that I had to manually sync, so I don't want to have to redo all of the links.

My Phone list displays 100 Google contacts and pulls in 188 Facebook contacts and I've only got Google's Gmail Contacts and Facebook for HTC Sense set up to sync with my contacts. My contact storage is currently at 5.46 MB.

my contacts, 1009 in gmail, and 2050 in face book ended up bloating to over 100mb which is obvs BS, something is effed up -- i dont like having to delete them all, now my contacts have no photos associated with them in handscent. all the great things about this phone are disappearing. nobody seems to have any answers, argh.

I'm expecting to get my Desire over the next couple of days and have a question for you clever bods. If I don't link my FB contacts with the phone, what functionality will I lose?

To me it seems a bit of a waste of time and space having all the freaks from my old school in my contacts list.

Theres a difference between linking contacts and syncing facebook

When you sync with facebook, it downloads all your facebook contacts. You can then choose to link them with your phone / google contacts.

All linking does is tidy up the people app. Linked contacts will not show as duplicates (1 for facebook, 1 for google for example).

If you don't sync android with facebook, you won't be able to use the friend stream application for facebook and maybe not the facebook application either. You can sync with facebook but when setting up, you can turn off contacts sync if you like and still sync live feeds.

In the people app, you can hide facebook contacts and then you just see the ones that you linked with google contacts.

If you press the phone or message application however, it will show you all of them, hidden or not.

Hmm ok cheers for that. I'm coming from Blackberry where linking your FB contacts just shows their FB profile photo as their contact photo in your contacts and adds a few things extra to how you can contact them from your contacts.

I'm not sure whether this function will benefit me or not tbh. I use FB regularly but I'm not overly keen on sifting through everyone to send a text or to call. :s

Its pretty similar. To be honest, without friend stream, the blackberry implementation of facebook integration is much much better.

My blackberry automatically put birthdays in my calendar. Also, you could poke, send facebook message or write on wall directly from the contact. You can't really do this on android, which is really annoying. I do miss facebook on blackberry.

Friendstream is nice though.

I came across this problem today, when I had recently noticed that my contacts storage was over 25Mb when it is normally around 5. Thought nothing of it until today when I was simply reading and listening to music on my phone when it got itself into an acore force close loop. With a new notification saying not enough memory to deal with SMS or something, I couldn't read it all inbetween closing the popups.

I checked my storage find that I had less than 1Mb free and contacts storage had soared over 45Mb.
then checked my people app to see it said i had 12000 facebook contacts, when I have about 60.
Then realised that I had 2 different Facebook apps in the list of accounts and sync settings. Facebook and Facebook for HTC sense.
I have then deleted both of those accounts but when I try to load the people app it freezes so I'm going to restart my phone and see if it helps. Is there a way to delete the cache of the contacts without deleting all your normal phone entries too? as I don't want to get stuck entering all my numbers manually again.

I had this same problem. Contact manager was using 32MB. I cleared the data and let it sync again. Now it is using < 4MB.

Not perfect but it works.

Thanks for this - what does this actually mean - you just resynced with (say) Outlook and FB (need to relink contacts too?) - and it reduced the size of the contacts storage by that much? Or did you have to re-input lots of contacts manually?
