Contacts verses People/ whats the difference?

When I go to the call log and try to save a number, sometimes I get 'save as contact' and then I get the option of saving to an existing contact, but mostly I get 'save to people' and there is no option to save to an existing persons details.

So, whats the difference? And, how to select save to existing contacts every time?

That "feature" always did seem redundant to me when I had my Eris.

I got in the habit of using Contacts just to use the syncing and left People alone.

Once you root your device, you can install a custom ROM which has one or the other.

Thanks, but how do I get 'contacts'. Just got a new unknown number and when I try to save it I get only the 'Peoples' option.
