contacts

Obviously this works fine for everybody else. Maybe give us some more details? Does this happens with everyone? Just landlines or cells? have you tried pulling the battery? doing a hard reset?

some people in my contacts show up on caller id and some don't. I don't know about the land line vs cell I'll have to get back to you on that.

Maybe they're calling from work and the number they're calling from is not the number you've got listed for them - they dial out on a different number than you call in on, for example.

Are the numbers in your contacts entered as 1-555-1212, and the incoming numbers don't have the 1? Or vice-versa?

Or they're in your contacts with area code, but the area code doesn't appear on the incoming number (or vice versa)?

That's all I can think of.

Yeah, it's most likely that your contacts don't have an area code and the caller id shows with area code or vice-versa.

that's what i was thinking. Your contacts should have each person's number like this: 777-555-1111. Dont put the 1 in front of the area code, the phone does that automatically.

The other thing that can cause this is running processes. If a process is running at the time a call comes in the phone may not have the temporary memory available to display the contact name. I used to have this happen on my Moto Droid when memory was low dues to background processes.

All numbers are local and come up the same way they are put into the phone. the wierd thing is that some come with a name and some don't.
