Help Contacts

Ok so I'm doing my contacts and it donned on me..... Why do I have to use the g-mail to add my contacts? Why can't I just add it to my phone like normal? Did I miss something?

Go to contacts, hit the menu button and add new contact.

EDIT: What mkbkr1 said(You beat me to it,lol). Everything is synced to your google account. So when you add a new contact you will be asked to use either your gmail account(all contacts are saved and can be transfered to a new phone) or phone only,unsynced(this means if your system messes up you will lose the contact).
