Help Control which apps start with phone

Ecky

Newbie
When I switch my phone on the following list of apps automatically start, some of these are desirable to run on startup, some aren't:

Alarm Not needed
Backup & Restore Not needed
Email Not needed
Google Mail Not needed
Juice Defender Ok to run
Launch-X Not needed (may need to start temporarily to set up my theme)
Google Mail Not needed
Market Not needed
Music Player Not needed
Settings Not needed
Setup Guide Not needed
User Support Not needed
Webroot Security Ok to run

45mb of memory is what's reported as free on startup, if I close all those I don't need, this changes to 70mb

Now here's what I find a bit odd, after I close all but juice defender and webroot, the following apps then start:

Backup & Restore
Market
Messaging
Settings
Titanium Backup

Erm ... Why?

Why does my phone think I need market, messaging, settings and TWO backup programs running when I've not even started doing anything on the phone yet?

And that's not even counting the other 8 apps 'auto-starting' which I closed that didn't then restart on their own

This is all from a powerup of the phone to just checking which apps are running and no other tasks/apps used or started by me in between

Is there any way I can block apps I don't want from auto-starting on powerup, and if I could stop certain apps from starting unless initiated by me that would be even better

I also notice that with a lot of apps, there's no option to exit them, all you can do is either use the back or home button and I notice that even when using the back button to navigate back out of the app, some of them still stay running, I wonder why that is?

As it seems there isn't much info on this, I've bought titanium backup pro and am gonna experiment with freezing apps then unfreezing them when I wish to use them

I have removed some (after backing them up) that I don't think I'll use at all, so it's just those I will occasionally need but don't want them starting until I do need them to worry about

I've only had the phone about two weeks so my vast knowledge of android phones by now is almost enough to fill the back of a postage stamp if I wrote it all down :D

Being pretty much clueless, as much about what apps are available to do this and just about anything else, and the fact that no suggestions have been forthcoming so far, I don't know what else to try

I wouldn't remove from startup anything except juice defender. One of the best Android features is that it frees needed memory by itself. Don't mistake Android for Windows. It isn't a RAM hog. Think about the biggest 2 apps you use. They don't add up to 40 megs. So relax about free mem and enjoy your new x8.
