Controlling Data Access

Hi everyone. I'm new to the whole smartphone thing, resisted it for quite awhile. But now I'm loving it on the third day in with the Droid X, just can't put it down.
I'm on the 150mb VZ plan and am concerned about data usage. WIFI at the office and home, but some days are spent entirely on the road. I want to be able to limit access to 3G data to just a few applications that I want updating throughout the day. I need Gmail, Voice, Talk and Weatherbug updating, but don't want anything else sucking data until I demand that it work for me.
Can this be done?

Welcome to the forums brite n shiny,

Goodnews:

I use a program called Droidwall. In searching for others I found a program called HiSurfing.

Maybe not so goodnews:

Both of these programs need root access. You can look at root access like the difference of having a normal computer user account vs being a system administrator. Seeing as how your only 3 days into your phone, rooting might be a little or a lot over your head.

Here is the link to the sub forums for your phone. You can find information about rooting and a slew of other information to questions you might have.

Here are the links to the 2 programs I mentioned.

Welcome aboard.

Thanks TMML. I wanted to avoid having to root. Like you said, that may be over my head at this point, but I'll learn it if that's my only option.
