Help Converted from the darkside (IP 3GS) - few qu regarding bloatware

Hi all,

First day with my shiny new Galaxy S2 on Orange UK.

Love it so far but am quite perturbed by the amount of apps on there that i cannot bin!

Now i have read about a bit about "rooting" and flashing non branded FW.

All i want to be able to do is delete most of the crap apps that are pre-loaded.

For this do i just need to "root" it?

Im not too fussed about the branded firmware unless anybody can give me some reasons why its beteer to have non-branded?

Also is the wifi signal strength terrible for everybody or just mine? Sat next to the IP which has 3 bars my SG2 only has 1!

if you root, you can use titanium app to freeze/remove any unwanted apps, branded or samsung.

if you don't want to root, if you flash a new firmware it will get rid of your branded stuff, but not the samsung stuff.

your wifi issue may be related to the modem on your phone, and updating your firmware may improve this.

sounds to me like it may be best for you to update to one of the latest firmwares then root. but this obviosuly comes with the usual health warnings about rooting........ warranty/bricking etc

I looked at all the firmware listed on this site but how do i know which to choose please?

Could you please explain why the frankenstein one and not the official XWKJ3 firmware?

Sorry to be a pain but my boss would not be a happy bunny if i brick my new phone the first day of having it!

The frankenstien one contains a UK generic CSC, the official one contains Netherlands CSC. Not sure if there would be any difference but its safer to go with the UK one i'd say.
 
if you wait until we get icecream sandwich, you will be able to disable and hide the apps that you dont want running, it wont remove them or free up space, but they wont be using any resources.

i dont think i can wait 3/4 months - the amount of crap they install makes browsing around the phone a right PITA.

Thankyou for the suggestion though - i think im going to dive in and debrand/root.

Can you create folders on the unrooted phones? (sorry its been a while since I was on stock) if so can you not just create a folder and stick all the unwanted stuff in it?

Or install an a that freezes or blocks the app.. This way if the blocked app doesnt cause other malfunctions, then you might be safe to delete it altogether.

Id rather freeze one app at a time and give the device a whirl, ..never know if some process might use one thing for another and if the component is removed,...

(this may not even be an issue, just a practice I follow...)

Do you mean in the app drawer? I use 'folder organizer' by Fabio Collini to group apps by categories. I also use Go Launcher Ex which lets you create folders in its app drawer. Neither requires rooting.

PS If you want to try custom ROMs, I'd suggest MIUI with the Go Launcher home replacement app:

Afaik the only feature you lose is the HDMI output.
