Root Convince me to root.

Does sound sweet with the hotspot and all. What will happen if Verizon catches you? Is it against the law?

You are breaking your contract and you can be charged for it. I believe, because you have not signed up, they will charge you the highest rate possible making it a very costly mistake.

However, I do not know of anyone who has been caught or charged.

I am rooted but I wont use wireless tether because I signed a contract that i would be breaking and my word means too much to me to do it.

With that all said, it is very good to make an informed decision before you root, tether, or anything. If you root, you really need to spend time on xda reading everything you can. Patience is #1. Many things look like they are frozen but they are not and if you battery pull... you can mess things up.

I just got an HTC Incredible today and coming from a rooted eris this this is sooo fast. I was pretty much forced to root my eris but this thing seems pretty good on its own. Other than wireless tethering and apps2sd is there any reason to root?

You don't need root to get free wireless tether. All you need to do is edit one string in the "DUN NAI" setting. I you search you will find the instructions. I rooted mine because I wanted programs like quick reboot and Titanium Backup.

I'm new to this forum and new to smart phones.

The HTC Incredible is my first smartphone.

That said I bought my phone almost 2 months ago. Verizons pre-installed bloatware was really annoying to me. Constant pop ups asking me if I wanted to purchase or continue my free trial of CityId. I noticed that Skype (which I will never use) was always running as a service, along with a few other programs. And I couldn't delete or even force close these useless apps. They just kept re-launching on their own. I even tried an auto task killer app and they just kept coming back.

I read up on rooting. Then hooked the phone to the computer loaded the usb driver for windows then ran unrevoke3. Clicking a single button to Root was really complicated and gave me a massive headache but I managed to do it. :-)

The result a much faster HTC Incredible with a battery life that's improved by at least 25%. All the Verizon juice sucking apps went by by. With the help of Root Explorer.
