Convince Me

Yea. I was the one that asked him that question. I was pretty surprised and excited when he responded that he outlasted the Droid X and Droid 2.
Battery life varies a lot.
MOST reports state that Vibrant and Captivate have average battery life.
MOST reports state that X has very good battery life.
But you will always have someone who says otherwise.

Frankly, instead of asking us to convince you to buy a phone, you should convince yourself because it will be your phone. You will be the one who is using it for the next year or so, not us.

With that being said, I like the large screen size on the X. In the mobile device world, size does matter :) . But the advantage pretty much stops there. I really do not like the look of the X, especially the 4 little rectangle hardware button at the bottom. It looks cheap to me. And when I was playing an X in the Verizon store, those buttons wiggled. It is never a good thing when some parts of the phone are wiggling. But of course, different strokes for different folks. Some people like the look of the X. But I don't.

The Super AMOLED screen is just stunning and there is no equal on the market right now. The hummingbird processor is faster than snapdragon and TI processors. You are free to install custom ROM on a Galaxy S phone but you cannot do the same on the X or it will become a brick.

The battery life of the Fascinate has to be better than the X because the Super AMOLED screen is more energy efficient. And the large screen on the X has to use more energy.

Samsung seems to be putting their financial and technological muscle on the Galaxy S line. So it should be good as they are the number 1 electronic manufacturer in the world, surpassed Sony. They don't become number 1 by producing sub-par products. On the other hand, Motorola Mobile Division was up for sale not that long ago, and nobody (I mean NOBODY) was interested to buy them. That tells you a lot of the company. Even the little Palm had generated a lot of interests when it was up for sale. So do you really want a phone made by a company that nobody wants to buy?

Last but not least, when you turn on the X, it gives you the short audio of "droid". It might please some macho guys, but it is a turn off to many women. :)

My advice to you is to go to the Verizon store after the launch. Hold both phones in your hands and decide it yourself.

I was pretty blown away by the picture and video quality on Vibrant.
With that said, text quality leaves a lot to be desired.
Also your statement that Fascinate "has" to have better life because it uses SAMOLED which consumes less power than an LCD is completely flawed.
1. AMOLED consumes less power in certain situations but not all
2. Even if AMOLED uses less power all the time, the screen is just one (although big) part of the phone.

Samsung as a company got so big not just because of its technology but also because of political stuff (I am not gonna talk about it).
Motorola recently sold off its mobility networking division, the phone division is actually doing very well and probably going to be spun-off as something else in a near future.

I just wanted to point out inaccuracies in your post not to get into an argument with you, so I apologize if I came out offsive.

With that said, for someone who uses it more as an entertainment device versus a business device (reading emails, documents), it would be a great device. So this would be excellent for most of us, like me.

None taken. This is the beauty of this great land of ours....that we can agree and disagree without killing each other, like some other parts of the world. :D

I know the screen is just one part of the energy consumption, but it is a very large part. :)

Energy consumption varies due to the way people use their phones. For example, some people could leave 10 apps running on the background at all time, and some people will close the app if they are not using it. The user behavior makes a lot of difference. That's why I usually take it with a grain of salt when someone tells me his/her friend has a Galaxy S phone and the battery life is great. We don't know how this person uses the phone.

As of the Motorola company thing, you might be right. I am not in the mobile phone business. I only heard this from my friends. Actually, one of my friend is working for Motorola and he told me NOT to buy anything from Moto because they are not good.

But regardless, I trust my own eyes. I went to the store and tried the X. If there is no Fascinate or the upcoming HTC EVO2, I might buy the X. But if I have other choice, I will not buy the X.

I have them both. After having the Fascinate for 2 days I have to say the battery life is not that great, but still better than the Incredible. The screen is really awesomely crisp, the size and shape is great. But, overall I don't see it have any HUGE advantages over the X.

I hated TouchWiz, but after putting ADW on it the overall experience has been good. IMO opinion it is a good phone, but is not worth making the change.

Actually, I'm just looking for other people to do my research for me.........just kidding. You make very good points in the rest of your post. I've tried the X at the VZW store. It just doesn't have that "wow" factor. If fact, the colors on the screen seemed a bit dull.

Anyway, once the Fascinate comes-out, I'll be spending lots of time comparing the two before I decide.

Who knows, maybe I'll walk out of the store a proud owner of a Storm 2............again, just kidding.

What exactly do you mean by "not that great"? Do you have exact numbers? You took it off charge at what time, and then after a certain number of hours it was at what percent?

I would love to get some raw figures here.

It had a full charge at 7:30 am. By 4:30 pm it was at 15%. I made some phone calls did the usual Facebook and web surfing I do on the X. I do not have hard numbers, because I charged since that cycle. The only piece of good news is that it has only gone through 3 charging cycles, so it should improve slightly.

I should mention that I have all the same apps and widgets as my X with the phone set up identical to compare battery life.

Could someone explain to me why HDMI out on a phone is a big deal?

I was awaiting the fascinate. Saw a dummy in the store yesterday, but would love to see it real, I want to use the keyboard as I've become accustomed to the real keyboard on the Droid 2.

I don't care about battery life, and processor speed on a phone, please.

Someone posted that the Fascinate isn't stuck with VZnavigator that you can get google maps, that isn't the same as voice turn-by-turn navigation.

I also read in another thread about problems with the Samsung line and GPS, can anyone elaborate?

The voice navigation on the Droid 2 is free too, I wouldn't pay for VZnavigator.

My girlfriend is due for an upgrade, we were looking yesterday, she says the Droid X is too big for her, and she thinks the Fascinate may be too big as well (we did see the dummy).
She wants to wait until it's available to make a decision, she does like the Droid 2's physical keyboard.
So it seems she is either going with the Droid 2 or the Fascinate.

VZ Navigator is a pre-installed app by Verizon. You don't have to use it if you don't want to. I have been subscribing the VZ Navigator and I like it myself. It is Assisted GPS and not just plain GPS, and it is supposed to be better because it is "assisted" by triangulating with the cell towers as well. You can download Google Navigation for free. It has voice turn-by-turn navigation feature. My current BlackBerry has both app (I really don't mind to pay the $10 fee). Personally, I rather use the VZ Navigator because for some unknown reason, the Google Navigation cannot locate me if I am inside a building and the address is about quarter mile off.

I like the look-n-feel of the Galaxy S phone and your girlfriend will like it too. :) The Droid line (except the DInc) is targeting the male customers and not the female customers. On the other hand, the Galaxy S line is more suitable for both genders, like the iPhone. :) Instead of waiting, she could go to Best Buy or AT&T store and check out the Captivate (like I did). It shares the same screen and the same interface. So it should give her some idea.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I know what VZnavigator is, it came on the Omnia, I had no desire to pay monthly for the service. I was just curious about the mention of googlemaps.

My girlfriend briefly played with the Sprint Epic at Best Buy but the battery was shot so she only got to use it for a minute. They only had dummies of the captivate.

I want this, screw the Samsung.
We have just got our hands on images of one of the upcoming HTC devices we wrote about. Our source describes the phone as being an EVO in a larger and more polished Nexus One body; brushed aluminum, very upper end of the market, you get the picture. “It makes the Droid 2 look like a kids toy,” our source told us. No word on if it is a global device, although… we’re betting it is. From what we can see the device has an 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, kickstand, 4.3-inch screen, 3.5 mm headphone jack, and, wait for it… a front facing camera.

Gorgeous, mysterious, EVO-ish HTC device headed for Verizon Boy Genius Report

@XFactor, but that device probably won't be available for at least 6 - 8 months minimum. Can you wait that long? And who knows what the market will be 6 - 8 months later? It could be a completely different world. :)

No way. It LOOKS nice, but:

A) HTC lost me with their QC of the Incredible. Bump charging? Reception issues? Come on.

B) There are no 4.3" AMOLED screens that we know of, and the EVO and Droid X screens (LCD) are really washed out compared to the 1st gen Incredible (AMOLED) which I have.

C) None of the HTC phones recently released have had good battery life.

D) The Samsung's Super AMOLED is its greatest strength; I wouldn't give up that tech after personally playing with the Vibrant (T-Mobile version).

EDIT: I'll admit the reported front-facing camera would be sweet.

Waiting can be the hardest part. LOL

I have the Incredible. I will admit it does have some issues. I also have the X. I will admit, it does have some issues. I'm sure once the Fascinate is released, it will also have it's share of issues.

All in all, I guess you have to weigh the good vs the bad, with all of these phones. There hasn't been one smartphone released which has been perfect. At least none that I know of.

Regarding the Incredible. I really like sense. I have no issues with the QC. The device feels solid and well made. Bump charging is definitely an issue for me. Speed, voice quality, reception all have been good with the Incredible. IMO it really is a nice package.

Everyone has their opinions of how these screen looks and how well they exhibit colors as well as battery life. Very subjective IMO.

Battery life is a problem on these phones. The only phone so far that has been above the pack is the X.

Screen seems to be a major player for people in deciding which phone to get. However, I went that way based on the Incredible when it was first released. After getting the Incredible based on that decision, I will have to say that I will not do that again.

I can't say what device will be my next choice. I have the X and overall, all things considered, it seems to be the best choice, for me.

Dont fret over the HDMI out thing. The TV Out on the Samsung phones is amazing. Having a mirror image of the phone on the TV is a major plus for the Samsung phones.

Spec wise the Fascinate has advantages. Feature wise...its hard to say. Depending on what u want it could go either way. I would probably give the Fascinate the edge tho just for the TV Out. And I hear the music playback is better. Speaker probably is better too.

IMO 4" is the sweet spot for size. Either phone is a good choice. If I had to choose one right now, I couldnt..lol In a way I'm glad the Fascinate wasnt out when I got the X.

I had TV out on the Omnia, never used it once in the almost 2 years I had it.

The biggest problem I have with the SAMOLED screen is the massively overblown colors. I can't understand why they can't make a screen with deep black levels as well as accurate colors. I prefer the screen on the X because of its accurate colors. When walking around looking at things in normal life they don't look like cartoons as they do on the Fascinate.

The second problem I have is with the whole Bing thing. If its incorperated too deeply into the OS it will mean longer waits for updates over other Galaxy S variants and Samsung is notoriously known for lack of updates and product support. Also according the the leaked screen capture of where the updates come from on VZW phones it looks like the updates for the Fascinate will be come directly from Verizon servers which clould mean even longer waits for updates.

The last problem I have is the build quality. These Galaxy S phones feel like they are made from the cheapest materials Samsung could find. My kids have toy cell phones that feel like they are better made than the Galaxy S line. I think I would be hugely paranoid to even drop the Fascinate on a soft object for fear of the damage it would do.

I really was so looking forward to this phone when I initially read about it but as the release gets closer and we find out more about it I think I will just stick with the X for now.
