I have a Galaxy Tab 2, Android 4.1.2, fairly new. I have read about an old game that I can play on it and am trying to put the files on it from my PC.
I first used my Win7 computer; downloaded necessary files to it, plugged in the Tab2 to USB, transferred the files fine. But the game on the Win7 machine required a CD Rom to play, and so won't play on the tablet.
There is a non-CD rom version of the game; it is a game from the late 90s, is no longer for sale, the original publishers have turned this into a free game, there is no piracy involved here. I did not want to mix that version with the version on my Win7 machine, so I downloaded the other version to a fairly fresh win XP machine.
When I plug the tablet into the winXP machine, I get a popup offering to install Verizon software to "help" me transfer files. I denied it, not trusting Verizon.
The tablet pops up a message saying that it cannot find software on the PC that allows file transfer, and lists a few applications that I guess it is looking for. One of those is "Service Pack 3". Assuming they mean Windows XP SP3, I have that on this XP machine.
It also lists a Samsung "USB Driver" - I hunted around and thought I had found that, managed to avoid the malware that Softpedia tried to hand me with an ad that looked like my download button, and installed it. It keeps giving me an error saying something's wrong with the installation.
I can see the folder where I want to install this in the File Explorer on the tablet and in Windows Explorer on the PC. I cannot copy-and-paste or drag to the folder, however -- it's as if it is write protected. No message appears when I try. On drag-and-drop, the dragged icon remains as "can't drop here" when I am in the target folder on the tablet.
Do I have to install Verizon's software? Is there some other way to get this done?
I am not interested in rooting the device, or at least not now. I am not developing software for it, at least not now. I am a programmer, tolerably familiar with file systems and other computer constructs, but am baffled by what I thought should be a fairly simple operation.
