could this mean a dual mode Evo LTE/WiMax?

No. The deal just happened. The EVO is pretty much finished hardware-wise.

It does leave the possibility open to future phones though.
 
Beceem has a chip that will be out next year.

This will take about 2 years to add LTE to there setup. And right now there is no point to add LTE right now they will wait for LTE-Advanced

He's right and in two years you'll be back here worried about you're Evo2 so enjoy what you have now. By then there might be some LTE available but right now WiMax is where it's at.
 
This doesn't seem to be a negative thing for Wimax, it would just allow for phones to have both LTE and Wimax radios in them to have 4G service even outside the major metropolitan areas.
 
Maybe this can be a first step in "opening up" the cellular networks. If Sprint supports both wimax and lte, they can roam on lte networks, such as AT&T, Verizon, T-Mo, and possibly even Europe (once lte networks are up, and assuming roaming agreements are in place). I see this as nothing but a positive.
 
I honestly think it will be better for LTE phones to be able to roam on wimax than vice versa. That way when verizon Finally starts launching their LTE network and phones, their customers wont be screwed by the crappy 4g coverage when they first roll out, rather they will be able to roam on sprint's already well structured wimax network.
