Best Buy has already started and stopped two rounds of pre-orders for the Droid X, and the retailer won't guarantee that customers who preordered will get their phone on launch day. Verizon Wireless has said it expects inventory shortages as well.
If I order my X online the second it becomes available on the Verizon website, does that guarantee that I'll get mine without having to deal with backorders?
Well yeah. But if I am one of the first people to order it, then will I be more likely to receive mine on the first batch than, say, somebody who orders it online in the late afternoon? No. There's a lot more than when your order something that factors if you'll be back ordered. So if you order and it gets back ordered then it's just something that happens.
oops. well, you get the idea....Not Found
Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here.

Thanks for the help, man. I've since decided to just go to the local Verizon store and deal with the rebate rather than wait another day and risk back orders. So working retail I'll tell u thus. If you are one of the first few it would significantly reduce your chances of back ordering. However that's never a guarentee. But be one of the first few and ya you probably have it in the bag, but there us so much that goes on between ordering and shipping that most people don't know about.
