Countdown to Windows 10...

I got back on the reserve list and they emailed to say

Because you’ve reserved, Windows will automatically take care of the download in advance. Then you’ll get a notification when your upgrade is ready to install. That way you can start using Windows 10 immediately – or schedule a time to install that’s convenient for you. If you have any more questions, check out the upgrade FAQ.

Microsoft explains what you’ll lose by upgrading to Windows 10

Say goodbye to Windows Media Center and control over your updates

But you will be getting updates........that is what everyone is always clamoring for, the latest and greatest updates.

(as a technical point this is a good thing, it is embarrassing the number of computers that are infected because they didn't update. If you really need to be in control of your updates though - get win10 Pro)

There's a choice in W10 Preview settings not when to download but when to install. Hopefully that carries over to the real thing, as they say in their faq.

Right now, I have build W10 Preview10130 running alongside in a separate partition of my ancient HP desktop. It behaves fine, but I 'm having trouble trying to see what makes it different from Win7 and why it takes so long to re-develop something.

But, forcing Grub to pop up by altering bios setup to boot from a flash, the Win10 Preview never launches thereafter. I have to reformat and reinstall. That's something I hope does not carry over to the RTM.

Put me on the eagerly counting down the days list. I used the earlier previews as a primary OS up until I got a new laptop on December. I haven't bothered with loading a pre-release OS on it yet, so I've been making do with 8.1 (Pro). The stupid MetroUI irritates me to no end (yes, I know I could install ClassicShell or whatever, I'm just lazy). So I'm quite looking forward to Windows 8.2 9 10.

The updates are kind of a double-edged sword. In the ideal world, users could be trusted to patch their machines in a timely manner. We unfortunately don't live in that ideal world, so a large percentage of computers [citation needed] remain vulnerable to a host of exploits for which patches were released years ago (like @fdbryant3 said). Windows 10 forcing updates is Microsoft taking steps to try and remedy that. Hopefully more problems will be patched and avoided rather than created by these updates. I guess we'll see.

I'm glad I'll be running the Pro version. ;)

I have 8.1 backed up already. I will probably install 10 in a few months, once all the initial bugs are worked out, and back that up.

I rarely use Win anyway, outside of the machines at work.

I personally enjoyed customizing the he'll out of Win 95, and though XP was a bit less flexible to that, I could at least build a custom installation CD with all the important mods/settings already incorporated.

Anyone know of way to have MS alter their update magic and install W10 on a separate partition, leaving my W7HP jungle unmolested? It's more because it wouldn't be fair to W10 to try and navigate my jungle.

Well, I have a partition that's blank right now, formatted to NTFS, made by booting on a GParted CD. So, technically, it's not a Win7 partition but it's certainly ready to have Win10 loaded in it – that's where I had my w10 previews installed. Maybe you're saying I should load a generic W7HP in there and update that?

Yes.

Sorry, hard to be verbose on a phone...

I'm seeing the Bad gateway message as well from phone.

Edit: It's working now.

"Temporary fault. Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible."

I'm not anxious with enthusiasm, just tired of waiting for something that I'll probably think wasn't worth the wait. I also think that when Chromebase AIOs finally run all my droid apps, I might be done with Windows anyway.

If you have Win7 or Win8.x running, you either already have or will get an invitation for your free upgrade to Win10, appearing on your task bar. Anxious for it, I clicked 'reserve' right away, then double-thought that. I then found threads like Win10 Offering Icon in Systray, which advise patience. It does seem reasonable to let the patches settle in before installing, so I've canceled my reservations. And I'd rather burn it in ISO form anyway. Choosing to reserve is an okay to install it right under your nose, right on top of your existing c: partition.

I don't know which is the right way to do this, perhaps no one does, being such an odd situation...

How did you cancel the reservation? Through the same icon on the desktop?
