Countdown to Windows 10...

It does seem reasonable to let the patches settle in before installing, so I've canceled my reservations. And I'd rather burn it in ISO form anyway. Choosing to reserve is an okay to install it right under your nose, right on top of your existing c: partition.

I don't know which is the right way to do this, perhaps no one does, being such an odd situation...

I hear that, having tried it a few times. I've also tried dual booting the Win10 preview with my Win7. They seem very similar, making 10 more like 7.1, with 8 (Metro) secluded in the start menu. I don't think Win10 is going to save Microsoft since they shot themselves in the foot, but it'll be fun to watch.

Why I’m Excited About Windows 10 (And You Should Be Too)

Windows 10 is shaping up to be great. It’s still in developer preview, so there are bugs, but it’s showing a lot of promise. Microsoft has been soliciting a great deal of feedback from those of us playing with it. The folks in Redmond, WA appear to be listening to what we’re saying too, which is a nice change. The end result should be a very solid, very usable, really cool new version of Windows. It’s something I am genuinely excited about.​
 
I'm looking forward to it. I've not looked forward to anything since XP. I came around to 7 pretty fast and am finding myself not hating 8.1 like I thought I would (especially after using RT) but I certainly weren't looking forward to or excited about them.

I've got a i5 surface atm which, long story but I didn't want to buy it in the first place... but I'm really starting to be glad we got it - and I'm excited about W10 for it :)

Are they changing their attitude toward "power users"?

If not, then this is just another OS I will largely ignore.
 
After over twenty years of relying on Windows to define computing, I can't help but rely on them one more time. I've dabbled with others but always wind up counting on some version of Windows as my main system. But if and when something convinces me to think otherwise, I'm there dude.

I have 2 laptops in my house (well 3 if you count Mrs Presidentes that sits unused on a shelf in out bedroom), my main running Windows 7, and a wee netbook that gets stuck in my rucksack whenever we go somewhere/my son uses to play minecraft.

I've reserved a copy for the netbook, but have no plans to run it on my main Laptop until I'm sure I'm happy with it.

Anyone how it will install? Does it install over the top of your existing OS or do you have the option for a totally fresh install once downloaded?

Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need to purchase Windows 10 or go back to your prior version of Windows and upgrade again.

You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.

So apparently both. You have install on top of your existing then clean install in place of that.
 
Well, they say it's the last Windows release, so they've built in an excuse for updates until the end of time.
 
Not everyone will get Windows 10 on its July 29th release date

It sounds as though Windows Insiders — who are already testing Windows 10 — will be able to receive the update on July 29th. After that, people who have gone through the Windows 10 reservation process will begin to receive the ability to update to the new OS. When the rollout hits them, Windows 10 will download to their computers before they're presented with the option to update. It actually seems like a smooth and sensible update process, even if it may disappoint some who were hoping to jump in right on day one. Microsoft doesn't state how long it expects the rollout to take.​
 
It makes sense to stagger it like with Android releases, if everyone downloaded it on the same day their servers would be overwhelmed.

Windows 10 no longer launching on July 29 for vast majority of people

When AMD accidentally leaked that Microsoft would launch Windows 10 this summer, it surprised a number of people. Even at the time, midsummer was near enough to seem unlikely, particularly given how badly Redmond bungled Windows 8. Microsoft later confirmed that the date was genuine, however, and has been riding hell for leather to finish the OS in time to make the ship date. Now, the company has given notice that the July 29 date is more of a guideline than an actual hard launch.​

Microsoft to finalize Windows 10 this week

Microsoft is planning to finalize Windows 10 this week, ahead of its official launch later this month. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company is currently working on final copies of Windows 10, with a release to manufacturing (RTM) build expected later this week.​
