Couple of questions...

Firstly i've just performed a factory reset and now my brightness when using browser and some apps (ebay & market) seems quite a bit dimmer than before. Battery is fully charged, both browser and phone brightness are set to max with auto brightness switched off?

Secondly, since the reset my Android Market is back to the old style?

Thirdly, i want to gain root access to the phone using CNET's guide but i can't figure out which insecure kernal to use and also which secure kernal to put back on after to remove the warning? My phone as it stands:

Model Number: GT-I9100
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband Version: I9100XXKI1
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468root@DELL143 #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKI4

Am obviously new to this but want to gain root access and eventually install Darky's ROM.

2) the Market should automatically update itself soon, if not try doing a google search for one of the latest APKs. I have the latest version of the market and never had to do anything.

Not sure about your other two questions, sorry. :(

Try this for brightness-

Brightness Adjust: The notification bar can serve as a brightness scroll on the Galaxy S 2 if you are not using the auto brightness option. Just hit the notification bar, hold for a second and swipe left to decrese and right to increase the brightness.

Thanks but even using the notification bar for brightness its still definatley not as bright as it was before the reset.

That's odd. Try enabling auto-brightness, check that the display adjusts to different light levels, then disable it.

Yup, because updates install to /data/app which is wiped during the reset.

I'm not familiar with that guide, but check the Root Guide in here for the CF-Root link. Page 6 of the thread linked to lists CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-42-v4.2-CWM4.zip, which is the kernel you want. The stock XWKI4 kernel can be found here - just scroll down until you see it.

Thanks heaps! Will check it out.

So how do i get the new market back then

It should update itself eventually, or you can manually install it - there's a topic in here somewhere with a link to the APK file.

Btw, once you're rooted you can use Titanium Backup to, amongst other things, integrate system updates into your existing ROM to avoid repeats in the future.

edit: duplicate topic in main section merged with this one.
