Root Couple questions about rooting

This is my first time posting here so hello all.

I'm running 5.9.902 on my phone and I am considering rooting my phone, but I have a few questions since im new to this.

Is there a way to unroot the phone after rooting if needed?

What happens if an update from verizon pops up? How would that hurt a rooted phone? Can I avoid updating somehow?

I really don't care about these custom roms because the only things I want are wifi tether and ps3 controller, but are custom roms really needed?

Can Verizon really track you using wifi tether? Has anyone been busted?

If someone could shed some light I'd really appreciate it.

There are a couple of ways to unroot a phone, but it would depend on the method you use to root it in the first place. The most absolute way is to flash the phone back to stock.

One of three things will happen. The best would be that the phone updates and you keep root. The second would be that the phone updates and you lose root. Usually, root is fairly easy to get back after an update, but not always. Third, the phone won't apply the update. Once rooted, you can freeze the update service so you are never notified.

Keeping in mind that tethering without a plan is a violation of the TOS you signed and that PS3 emulators may violate copyright, a custom rom may have those features built into them without the hassle of making them work with your existing OS.

I know AT&T has sent letters and added plans to users for tethering. I would assume Verizon has a similar policy.

Thanks for the response!

Ok. The method I'm looking at right now is the MotoFail way on this website. How does one go about flashing to get root back?

That sounds great right there. How would you go about freezing the update service?

How annoying. We gotta pay for this crap anyways and they wanna charge more for something we already have. Might do a bit more research on this one. Wonder if having an unlimited plan matters.

Oh there was one major question I forgot to ask. If I were to root. What would be the procaution to take just in case I got a brick phone?

If you plan on rooting, the first app you want is Titanium Backup. That will let you backup your apps as well as freeze the ones you don't want. Also, you'll want to do a complete Nandroid backup.

As for the discussion of the tethering policy by U.S. carriers, many agree that you are paying twice for the same data. Many understand that it's not exactly the same and right now, at least it's all academic because the policies are in place and you signed the agreement. It is what it is.

Thanks for the info. I just want to ask one more thing before I root.

According to this guy on the third post

forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497690

he says we can unroot if needed using petes Motorola tools.

Can someone confirm?

This thread has answered most of my questions, but I was wondering do I need anything else besides the Titanium Backup and Bootstrap if all I really am rooting my phone is for full access to the System files?

Yes, If you want full access to all the files on your phone I would get root explorer from the market it will allow you access and change any file you want. Be careful with the because you can delete or change files that can mess up the operation of your phone.

Pete's only works with 5.5.866. If you are on any of the ota you can not unroot with it.

Correction ... many rationalize that they are paying twice for the same data.

Unlimited data means unlimited data to/from your phone. It does not mean unlimited data to/from your phone and as many computers you can also connect.

It is obvious that the rate was set with that assumption.

I have unlimited data and mobile hotspot. It is a great deal. It is cheaper than two numbers. It is also consistent with my written agreement with Verizon.

One last quick question. If I want to unroot and I do like fatpomp said and just flash .902 fxz, does that mean my root apps such as TiBu and Bootstrap will be wiped off the phone along with the phone being unrooted?

Yes, you will be just as if you had never rooted or installed those apps. You will have all the stock and blur apps.
