Couple Questions

1) What is the difference between custom ROM's and rooting your phone.

2) When you are connected via wifi can you turn off the 3g network connectivity and still send/receive calls? Probably no I think.

You might like to try Skype for sending and receiving calls with 3g off.

Rooting let's you access files that you couldn't otherwise; a custom ROM is a modified operating system.

This might be be too much info about rooting, but if you're considering rooting, it's definitely good info to know:

You most certainly can still send/receive calls, along with SMS messages. On CDMA phones, voice calls do not happen on 3G under any circumstances. And when Wifi is enabled, 3G is disabled by default.

You might have heard that on CDMA networks (like that of Verizon and Sprint), you can't do simultaneous data and voice. That is true ONLY if you're relying on 3G for data. If you have wifi or 4G service, you CAN talk and surf at the same time.

Even on GSM-based phones, if you disable 3G, you should still be able to get voice calls (and data) on the slower EDGE service.
