Help CPU Usage utility?

Fulltime Traveler

Well-Known Member
Is there a utility/applet/function that will tell me how much processor capacity each process is currently using?

My Bionic has taken to becoming unusably slow about once a day. It will take a minute or more to do anything until I reboot. I would like to know why before I do another factory data reset.

Thanks.

Do you periodically clear the data cache partition where temporary data is stored? It can become corrupted over time and cause increases in CPU usage and lengthened response times.

With the Bionic powered down
Hold Power/Volume Up/Volume Down at same time until a menu appears.
Use Volume Down to highlight “Recovery”.
Press Volume Up to select.
Screen with Motorola logo appears then screen with Android on its back appears.
Press and release Volume Up and Volume Down at same time.
A menu appears.
Use Volume Up and Volume Down to highlight “wipe cache partition”.
Press Power to select.
After it completes use Volume Up and Volume Down to select “reboot system now”.
Press Power to select.

I clear the cache partition on my Maxx every Saturday.

An interesting change in 4.4.4 on the Maxx is that when you do a Factory Data Reset it also clears the cache partition. It never did before.

That didn't help. The phone still slows to a crawl about once a day and doesn't improve until I reboot it.

When I get a chance I'll do an FDR.

It's a shame that there is no utility like the Task Manager in Windows so I could see what's consuming the system resources.

You could try running in Safe Mode (disabling all aps you added without uninstalling them). If the problem stops then it was caused by an app that you added.

1) Power down
2) Power up by holding Power and Vol Up/Down simultaneously
3) Vol Down to Recovery, then press Vol Up
4) Press Vol Up/Down simultaneously
5) Press Vol Down to last option (wipe cache partition), then press Power
6) When cache is cleared, press Power again to reboot
I tried this on my Bionic and I get the menu that shows recovery. I pressed Vol Up and whether I hold Vol Up+Vol Down or not, I get an Android Robot picture on its back with the front hatch open and a red triangle with an exclamation point. I can't seem to get to the option to clear cache.

See updated message.

When you get the Android on its back you simultaneous press and release Volume Up/Volume Down.

It is a little "clunky" and you may have to try it a time or two.

Hit up+down a few times but it finally worked.

Your new instructions leave out the initial power down.

Added to instructions. Thanks.

Getting bot buttons recognized at the same time takes some practice. When you convince yourself that it's impossible ... it works the next time.

Running in Safe Mode seems to result in the phone rebooting itself after every few minutes of use.

I would take it to where I bought it and tell them what I had done to diagnose the problem.

The first thing they are going to do is ask if a Factory Data Reset had been done.

The Factory Data Reset will wipe everything including all apps that were added and all customizations. If you are into game playing it can be a real problem in the loss of progress data.

Thanks, Thom. I'll do an FDR when I have the time. I have already taken screen shots of the home page screens, to remind me what I need to reinstall.

You can try looking at System Panel, which will show processor usage, or GSAM Battery Monitor, which can show which apps are using the most battery.
