Help Cracked Screen

maquina

Member
Has anyone had to replace the screen on their Galaxy Nexus? I just noticed a line going from one end of the screen to the other and it turns out it's a crack. I have no idea when it happened. I always have a Diztronic case on it, but that doesn't provide a great deal of protection against falls I would assume. I do have Asurion insurance which I have never used (how much is a replacement from them?).

I guess what I'm asking is if there is a way to replace the screen myself or should I file an insurance claim. If I do file a claim will I get a new phone or will it be a refurbished one?

Thanks for the help.

Here's a picture of the break:

 :(

Sorry about the crack... yeah, that's GOT to be distracting. You probably want it repaired.

Asurion has a $99 deductible on Nexus and they will either repair or replace your Nexus. Whether the replacement (if they choose not to repair it) is new or refurbed depends on the status of their stock. You can call them and ask at (888) 881-2622.

EDIT: In case you're grandfathered into unlimited data (like I am), the LAST thing you want to do is activate a dumb phone on your line while you await repair/replacement. The minute you drop unlimited data, you LOSE IT and you can't get it back. You will be put on the Double Data 4GB/month promotion at best once you re-activate your Nexus.

Your best bet is to keep the smartphone activated on that line (or buy a cheap smartphone spare at Swappa to use while your beloved Nexus is being fixed.

Thanks for the reply and especially the part about the data. I do have unlimited data and I would really hate to loose that. I can use the phone normally and honestly I don't even feel the scratch with the screen protector covering it. I'm going to give Asurion a call and give that a shot.

Thanks again!

Just as a side note...I cracked the screen on my phone and I didn't have insurance. Called Samsung and they replaced the screen for $163. -Ryan

Well Saint, I'm going by WAYYY too many people here in the forums who had unlimited data, activated a dumb phone temporarily, and then reactivated their smartphones after repair/replacement/recovered... only to discover that their unlimited data was no more.

I can't tell anyone else what to do, but if it were ME: I would take no chances at all. ESPECIALLY since I'm locked in on the $9.95 unlimited data

I had to do just that... change my plan to a dumb phone...and VZW gave me 30 days to get back to my old alltel unlimited data plan. It probably depends on who you are talking with... Some people just don't know or won't help. After my replacement came in the mail I was able to get back to my old plan with no questions asked.

Glad to hear you were one of the fortunate ones, Mahalo! Those of us on unlimited data are costing Verizon money, so they're understandably anxious for any chance to roll us off of it.

My last call to Verizon showed my unlimited data promotion ending sometime in 2038... so it's pretty much a lifetime thing (if I can keep it). Finding an understanding and cooperative rep who put you back on unlimited was - from what I have read - like finding a needle in a haystack. Too many people here have reported dropping it for even a DAY and losing it.

As of today I filed a claim. The deductible amount was 99.00 due immediately. My replacement phone has a scheduled delivery date of tomorrow (04/13/12). They provide "free" next day shipping. I did ask if my replacement phone would be a new phone or a refurbished one, the representative said she did not know for sure, but that as of now 85 - 90% of their replacement phones are new. The replacement does come with new one year warranty through Asurion which provides some piece of mind. Once I receive my phone which should be tomorrow if all goes well, I will post an update as to the condition of the replacement phone. I hope this helps anyone having to deal with Asurion in the near future.

As a side note, you can file a claim on line, but I chose to call to ask about the phone being a new or refurbished one. The process on the phone took no more than 15 minutes it was easy and as painless as could be expected.

Chief, has something changed? Just before the GN released my OG Droid died. I called Verizon CS before contacting Asurion. The Verizon Rep asked me if I had my old LG Env2 (dumb phone) and I did.
She said she would activate it until I got my replacement from Asurion.
I panicked and told her I had Unlimited Data and did not want to void it.
I was assured of the policy on replacing a damaged device would not void it.
I let it happen and my replacement OG Droid was reactivated with ULD.

So, unless something changed since then, as long as you get it clear and noted on your account its OK.

But it is frightening isn't it.

I could put the OP to shame. I would post a picture except I don't have a memory card in the D1 I activated to use. Basically, I fell asleep on my sofa bed. Woke up in the morning, went to fold it up and didn't realize I'd fell asleep with my phone on the bed. It fell into the collapsing arm.

I saw it drop but the action was already in motion. I stopped as soon as I could, but I heard (and saw) "CRUNCH". It's pretty bad. I'm pretty sure the PCB was affected.

I am going to place my claim this weekend with Asurion. Thank god for that. My D1 feels like an antique now. I can't help with the "dumb phone", but...

I chatted with a rep (rather than call so I could screen shot ;) ). For some reason to activate at D1, you have to switch plans to a 3G Unlimited Plan. They promised (and again, I have a screenshot) that I would not have a problem switching to a 4G Unlimited Plan once I got my "New" (I would imagine refurbished despite the above comments) GNex.

What really sucks is I had one of the "good" GNex without the reception issues, etc.

Oh well, I will update when I get my phone next week. Can't wait. This D1 is killing me!

Follow up on my Asurion replacement phone:

I received the phone on Friday (less than 24hrs after filing a claim). The phone as far as I could tell is new. It came in a new box with a new battery, headphones, and literature. Here are some pictures of the packaging.

The only difference I could tell right away was that my original phone was made in Korea where as this one is made in China. Still by no means a deal breaker for me.

Everything was going fine until I turned the device on (before I turned it on I put a cheap screen protector on it to avoid any scratches), and I noticed a pink hue to everything. The one thing I specifically remembered when I first bought my Nexus was how vibrant and bright my screen looked. Looking at this phone I immediately new there was something wrong. I removed the screen protector thinking that it was the cause of the pinkness and compared it to my original phone which I still have and there is a clear difference. The whites on my original phone are white and the "whites" on my new phone are pink.

I called again today and explained the situation and after a few minutes of troubleshooting the situation they are sending out a replacement phone for the replacement phone, which I should receive tomorrow.

your getting a brand new nexus? i was stuck with a refurb as a warranty replacement

I guess through warranty you probably get a refurbished phone from Verizon. Mine was an insurance claim with Asurion. Granted there is no way to be certain that my phone is not a refurbished phone, but it does look new.

Any way don't feel too bad I'm already sending back my "new" phone because of my amazing pink screen

Another follow up on my replacement phone being replaced because of a slight pink tint to the screen. I received a replacement phone yesterday 04/18 and unfortunately this time around I definitely received a refurbished phone. I'll post some pictures later as I'm currently at work.

The replacement phone seems just as fine as the new replacement phone I received the first time. There are no scratches of any kind. Now the reason I was sending back the first replacement was because of a slight pink tint to the screen. So the first thing I did was turn this phone and my original phone on to see the difference if any of the two screens. Unfortunately this phone also isn't as white as my original phone. The whites are very white on my original phone and it spoiled me a bit. This phone is an improvement over the first replacement though, even though it is a refurbished phone and not a new one.

So now I can't decide if I should keep the new phone that I was initially sent with the slightly pink screen or the refurbished phone with a slightly better (yet not as white as my original phone) screen.

Also has anyone had any experience with a slightly pinkish or discolored screen. Does the screen get better whites after an initial "burn in" period?

I have a few days to make my final decision and send one back. Any input would be appreciated.

Can I get what number you called? I'd like to purchase a screen (mother dropped it on tile floor) and can't find an LTE middle housing and screen available.

I don't mind doing it myself, have already taken the phone apart out of curiosity. (Electrical Engineer in Grad School :D )

Thanks.

I dropped my phone and the screen chipped and cracked. I ordered an insurance replacement through Asurion online. It arrived the next day and wasn't in the Verizon Retail box. Sure enough there was an Asurion sticker where the battery goes that replaced where the samsung sticker with the MEID # and such would be located. So far I haven't had any issues that were major enough the request another replacement.

I noticed that the screen does come all the way up to the edge of the phone body. I'm don't mean a gap between the edge of the screen and edge of the phone, but the top of the screen edge and the top of the phone edge. It's most noticeable at the bottom of the phone. This was nearly flush on my original Galaxy Nexus. Has anyone else noticed this?

The screen also seems to have less of a radius.
