Craigsdocks

My dock still works great from day one, no special chargers, no soldering. It charges, it hasn't fallen off, its practically invisible(which I guess is ugly to some people). I installed it and haven't thought about it since.

Those craigsdocks are some of the most Rube Goldberg looking things I've seen in decades! I think the iBolt/Verizon dock looks ok, but its downright sleek next to the craigsdock. To each thier own, of course.

And really, how many pages of discussion here about charging issues with the Verizon dock when it has nothing to do with the dock itself and everything to do with the car charger you use.

I don't know what your definition of sleek is but bulky and plastic shouldn't be it, my phone looks like its attached directly to my dashboard the dock is virtually invisible, it doesn't get much more sleek than invisible. And it has everything to do with the dock, I had one tested it extensively. It steals 500+ma from whatever charger you use. I returned it because I refuse to reward a company that sells a product that you must disassemble and modify before it works correctly. Its hilarious that you say it has nothing to do with the dock as I am using the same charger now I did with the ibolt, my phone charges now running nav or whatever I want, it didn't with the ibolt if the screen was even on at 10% with no apps running.

I have to agree with Kane, how can the Verizon dock look sleeker when you can't even see the Craigsdock when the phone is inserted? The only reason I don't have one yet? I'm cheap. I have a universal holder, and I take the two seconds to plug a standard charger into it prior to inserting it in the holder. The benefit is that I can remove the phone and talk on it while it's still charging (it's been necessary lately as I've been using my phone/battery very hard).

Also ... 99% of this thread is dedicated to modifying the Verizon dock so it actually charges. If you'll read through the thread, the dock actually sucked power unless you used a special charger. The craigsdock plugs the charger directly into the phone, no dock drain is possible.

Stepping down off my high horse now ... sorry if I offended at all.

No offense taken! The CraigsDock is a sturdy piece, and appearance is subjective so opinions regarding aesthetics can be taken for what they're worth. When the phone is in the cradle, the CraigsDock is definitely less visible than the VZW/iBolt dock. The big difference is when the phone isn't in the dock. The VSW just appears more sophisticated/sleek, regardless of its bulk. Debating opinions is silly, I just wanted to clarify my position.

Regarding charging mode: shorting pins 3 and 4 is a fairly easy fix to force AC Charging mode. Or many custom ROMs offer fast USB charging mode.

My vzw dock charged in ac mode, with the dock attached the phone would lose between 200-300ma with the same charger and cable but no dock the phone would gain between 200-300ma. The dock does have internal circuitry that is what most of the vzw dock thread is about, how to modify the internal circuitry to get the dock to stop stealing power. Its a garbage design period, they do not deserve to make money selling it. I have read that they have corrected the problem with newer docks so if you have one of the old ones return it and get a new one, don't waste your time modifying something they should never have sold, take it back and let them eat the cost of their mistake.

As far as the looks I don't see my dock when I'm not in the car, that is the only time my phone is not in the dock.

Debating opinions ... and calling each other bad names ... is what the internet is for! No? LOL :D

Shorting pins is beyond my capabilities ... and desires ... with an off the shelf device. But I guess they fixed all that with the current generation of chargers.

Oh, I think both (and all) cradles are butt-ugly when the phone is not inserted ... ;).

Have a great day!

Well, apparently you guys feel pretty passionate about the CraigsDock so I'll leave well enough alone! The new version of the Verizon Car Dock doesn't have the Shotky Diode that was draining power.
If you still feel it is a "garbage design", then there's really nothing else to say.

Naw ... I have a universal cradle. I take two seconds and plug my charger into my phone and shove it into the cradle. Bonus ... if I need to talk on my phone while it has a low battery ... the cable isn't attached to the dock. I just like to stir the pot occasionally!

If my universal cradle falls apart, I'll have to make a decision then. No reason to spend any more money now!
