Help Creating an ad hoc wifi connection...

I would like to create an ad hoc network on my lap top at work and share its internet connection with my Droid since I have weak connectivity during the day. I figured this might improve my battery life a little as well as my connection speed. I can't get the Droid to find the connection once it has been created. Has anyone else tried this? Can this even be done right now?

I dont think android is capable to seeing adhoc networks which is why, on the G1, the phone needed to be rooted and had to install Busybox and terminal emulator to run a bunch of scripts to connected to adhoc...

OKAY, it's been a year and Froyo is everywhere...is there a way now for me to share my laptop's Clear 4G connection with my Droid over an ad hoc connection? I would settle for a paid app at this point.

Hey gregbridwell: I got to thinking--this problem is two-sided, right? I mean, (1) Android will not accept an ad hoc wireless connection; and (2) Windows will not offer an AP connection. If there's still no app that can compel Android to see ad hoc SSID's, there is a way to make your Windows platform act like an access point.

It's called Connectify, but it only supports Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Doesn't matter if you're running 32- or 64-bit versions, but it definitely does not work on Starter Edition.

Connectify is free, so if you've already got Windows 7 installed, I commend it to you wholeheartedly. Easy to configure, no adware, and works as advertised. I use it to share files between Droid and laptop over wi-fi even when I'm not using it to piggyback on my Clear 4G connection. Verizon 3G can be pretty fast, but it doesn't give me 10.5 Mbps (down) in the bathroom.
