Root creating apks

I have a rooted lg ally, (vs7400) and i want to customize the messaging apk, because droidpirate's sms notification icon wont work when i try to apply it with metamorph. basically, ive seen a lot of posts about "pushing" a new apk onto a device, but i dont have everything i need for that (such as an apk developing/editing program... although i would get one if i knew where to look)

basically what i am asking is, does anyone know how to change certain graphics within an apk? (other than using metamorph, it hasnt worked for me with mms/sms icons)

Its not that, just the wrong area to b askin this. No such program, commands yes, requires linux.

Some frown upon this, but you can actually "unzip" the .apk with 7Zip or WinRAR, find the image you want to change, and change it.

BUT, instead of "rezipping" the .apk, you need to OPEN the apk in 7Zip or WinRAR, nagivate through the folders to find the image you are replacing and just drop it in. This will keep the signature intact.
