Root Custom kernel with no custom ROM?

I'm wondering if it's possible to flash a kernel without having a custom ROM installed on the Shift.

I used to have had a custom ROM installed and flashed a nice kernel that allowed me to overclock my phone to 1.5GhZ.
Now since the Gingerbread update, I couldn't really find a specific Kernel to flash.
So my question is: Is there a kernel that you can flash without having installed a custom ROM?
If not, then do any of you have installed a custom ROM + a kernel that allows overclocking up to 1.5/1.8GhZ that's stable ?
I don't really care about ANY other options in the kernel, but the stability and overclocking ability.

If your running the Stock rooted Froyo Sense ROM, then yes.. you can flash a custom kernel. There are several kernels over at xda that work for any froyo Sense ROM. I would suggest x99's kernel.. but that's just me. If you are running the Stock Gingerbread update, your going to have to wait. there won't be any custom kernels available until htc releases their source code.

OK, thank you for your answer.
Now to my understanding, in order to have a custom kernel at this point, one would have to refrain from installing the official Gingerbread update that the Shift received several weeks ago? Because at this point, if you just wipe and reset data and settings to factory ones, your phone will reboot with Gingerbread. At least mine did.

If you accepted the ota update that was pushed to your phone then you are no longer rooted. You won't be able to flash anything until a new root method is found and you re root your phone.

That's really weird you're saying that, because I can still perform all the tasks that I have been ever since my phone was rooted i.e wirelessly tether, use force roaming applications etc.

Did you accept the ota update that was pushed to you device from Sprint or did you flash a Gingerbread ROM?

I flashed a Gingerbread ROM, however after a while I wiped factory data and when the phone booted again, it was Gingerbread.

Just because you wiped data doesn't mean anything. Once you flashed 2.3, that is the version your phone has. The only way to revert would be to nandroid back. You did not break root, because you did not install the factory release, you flashed a ROOTED version of that release. (Not the same thing)
