Help custom ringtone for text?

i was wondering if i can assign custom ringtones for my text message alerts, thru the phone regularly, so far i havent seen anything, if you can assign them, please tell me how cuz i've obviously missed it.

or do i have to download an app? handcent was it called?

Unfortunately, there is still not a native way to do this on the phone.

I use HancentSMS (FREE https://market.android.com/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms&feature=search_result )and prefer it over the stock SMS app anyway.

To assign a custom tone, you have to have an active conversation with that person. When you do, go into that conversation and click the icon at the top right of the screen that looks like a person with a gear on them. IN the notification settings, you can set up individual ringtones for txt's from them, as well as change the color of the notification icon. I find this useful when I have the phone on silent, I can look and see by the color of the icon who the message is from.

You can also try Ringo Lite or the Pro version it should do what you are wanting.
