Root Custom ROM's?

Hey guys. I've done a little research but not totally sure on this, as I don't know if the bootloader is cracked or not.

But, is it possible to put Custom ROM's on the Droid/Milestone? If there is, what's the best one out right now? ANd also is there one based on MotoBlur?

The boot loader is locked so it's not a real custom ROM. People create their own and do a back up and offer that as a custom ROM. They tweak it so people who are not so inclined can make their phone fast and sexy but just the touch of a few buttons!

That doesn't make a great deal of sense... so are there custom ROM's that use this method then, do they run well, are there any based on other ROM's (Nexus One etc)
