Custom SMS tones

So i have a custom tone that i thought was set for sms messages. But for some reason it isnt playing when i get a text message. So is there a setting that's different for text messages or is it the same as notification messages. The custom tone plays for emails correctly

It sounds like you set it for email only. In you SMS app, goto into settings and you should be able to change it there. I hope this helps.

im using the messaging thats on the phone. the one i created is in notification ringtones. do i have to download a text message app just to get that?

You shouldn't have to download something special. Sometimes the setting the messaging ringtone can be flaky. Especially on new devices (Note). I'm guessing that you set by going to Settings | Sound | Default Notification. You should be able to go into the app where you read SMS messages, hit the menu button and choose Settings, you should see options in there for turning off the notifications and choosing a tone to play. Changing it here allows you to have a distinct tone for SMS messages from other notifications.
