Thought I'd share my kluged together Garmin/Tetrax car mount with anyone who might be looking for a cleaner/smaller option to the Motorola version.

Do you care to give more details about parts? I too have suctions part from my Garmin Nuvi. But it looks like you are also using Tetrax small piece and holster clamp? Which Tetrax part did you use (name of the model) and where did you get that holster clamp? I curious where to get these extra parts and how easy was it to connect it together? Any gluing or does it all interconnects by itself?

Brilliant!!! That is exactly what I will be doing. FIX ($15) and Mount+Bracket ($1). I guess bracket fit doesn't matter, just a flat surface and a place for a magnet to put into GPS mode. Thanks!!!

Thanks for the info, this looks like a very viable option! Unfortunately the link to the Garmin part doesn't bring anything up on eBay, just a blank page. I have a feeling it was taken down or the location was changed.

More information please. I wanted to use my garmin mount as well, but I was thinking to find a universal clip that could clip onto the ball part to hold the X. Please let us know what that clip is and how well it grips the phone or if it's just being used to stabilize it.

I'm not understanding why you would take that Tetrax that you can put almost anywhere and stick it to an ugly suction cup...I would think the point of the thing is to get rid of the ugly suction cup.

The mount really doesn't "grip" the phone at all, more for stabilizing it. I'm not sure about the socket mount size being universal so i can't comment on that.

Ebay has a ton of these Garmin mounts available for cheap too.

What i'd really like to have is a ProClip style device holder in place of the Tetrax; much more secure way to mount the phone

I actually also have a Tetrax X-way vent mount, but i just couldn't stand having a A/C vent covered. I also didn't want to permanently affix the mount to my dash; the windshield mount allows me to mount it in different cars and rentals when i'm on the road.

might consider using a heat gun to soften the plastic of the mount and squeeze it in a bit and let it cool off. that way the clip will actually secure the phone.

I like the ability to move it from car to car as well, and also prefer not to cover a vent. I found

this one on ebay and it seems to be wide enough to hold the X in landscape. Just not sure how strong the suction cup will hold.

As much as I like Tetrax solution, I decided to go with Arkon and ordered it yesterday from

Arkon SM410 Cell Phone Mounting Kit & Mega Grip Cradle - eBay (item 360284968964 end time Aug-26-10 14:12:55 PDT)

It covers all windshield, dashboard, and vent mounting options. Got sold by this demo

Did you order it already? A quick web search found it on Amazon for $14.95 and free shipping (with Prime), versus the ebay one for $20 + $5 for shipping. The 3 mounting options seals the deal for me on this!!!

That Arkon mount is pretty sweet but those flaps on the side poke out too much. I rather have my screen in the fore-front. Really good price though.

I was thinking to use Arkon for horizontal GPS mount only so flaps will be on the top/bottom cutting some sun glare, I hope...

Damn, didn't search on Amazon so ordered it from eBay :( Got too excited last night and didn't want to wait. Oh well, $10 overpaid bucks...

BTW, also ordered Amazon.com: Griffin Technology PowerJolt 2 amp Power Charger for iPad, iPhone and iPod (Black): Electronics ($15) - 2A charger, used actually for iPads, is a must for DX if you are planning to use GPS while charging it up. Otherwise, on a longer trips you will discharge battery faster than charging it up. I also ordered 6ft angle connector microUSB black cable (that one I ordered from ezeStand guy, his website had it listed for $3.98). Couldn't find any other reliable quality black cable like that with an angle connector.

I actually ordered this car charger for my old phone off ebay for like $4. It's an OEM Alltel branded charger and feels really solid. Since Verizon bought them out, this is probalby their overstock. I used GPS the other day with it plugged in for almost an hour and my phone went from 90% to 100% during the trip!!

You are killing me with cheaper alternatives lol!!! ;) How much current is this charger rated to? I have read in another thread where some using 950mA/1A chargers and phone battery drains after awhile w/GPS. Just wanted to be on a safe side. I was originally thinking about that popular Motorola 950mA rapid charger (most popular buy on Amazon), but hesitated and ordered Griffin part. It actually looks cool with a green LED circle when active. Should have it sometimes later in a week.

What can I say? I'm cheap! :D

I saw that one after I got mine. I have no idea what it's rated, but when I saw that it actually charged the phone when I was using GPS, I figured it was strong enough. I just hope it's not too strong where it will jack my phone up.

P.S. Mine has a pretty blue LED when plugged in! :p
