sms popup is a handy app that allows you to set specific tones for each individual contact. It also has a plethora of other features. Best thing it's free too.

I did it using the zedge app.

Go to the personalization menu,. Scroll to sounds > notifications > message then pick your tone.
Also if you want to be able to use you own tones make sure you save your sound in it Sd card in a folder named Notifications
