Help Customized notification tone for email contacts?

Lurker
I have to say that I am in love with my new phone ;-) I have made the switch from a nice blackberry torch 9800- which I had no issue with at all. It was getting super tired and needed to be put to rest, it is grateful.

The new HTC does everything better than the torch(shocking, I KNOW!). However, there is only one thing that I could do with that BB that I cannot figure out how to do with the HTC and it is a HUGE issue for me. I need a customized alert/notification/ringtone for specific email contacts (SMS would also be nice, but not a major issue). In other words when I get an email (gmail only) from someone specific, I need the notification tone/ringer to tell me I have email from them, specifically. I really only have 3 or 4 that need to be customized.

I have several international contacts who I do not speak to on the phone (i.e. they do not call me) so, I do not have telephone numbers for them. I have Skype addresses and email addresses for them. With the BB, I added them to contacts (w or w/o a phone number) and if I received an email to my gmail account I was alerted with a specific chosen ringtone. Email that was sent from others had a generic notification tone.

Is there an app? a tweak? something I am missing? If the BB can handle this, surely Android can do the same? I have added them to my phone contacts and entered the email address in the information- chosen the specific tone for that contact. I have received emails from them and I still just get the standard default email notification sound.
thanks for your help!

Yeah it sux u can't.. I like that with eachtext I get from diff ppl.. I like the different notification sounds for contacts

Try and go under the People app. Select the contact you want to change the ringtone on, and scroll down to "Ringtone". You should be able to apply a specific ringtone to any of the contacts listed in here. :)

I haven't tested if it works for emails too yet, but it works for phone calls. ;)

New Gmail update has this feature!
You need to make a "label" with these contacts, then edit the settings for that label with a custom ringtone. Your normal emails will still use the default ringtone, but anyone in this "label" will use the custom ringtone. Make sure Gmail is the newest version, then click on the "learn more" at the top of the screen. Scroll down to notifications, click on the learn more about notifications, then expand "only messages in certain categories or labels" for instructions.

I use handcent for text messaging. You have to enter a conversation, then click the menu button, then click personalization. Set custom ringtone for that contact here. Other contacts will still use the default ringtone.

Click, tap, whatever, shut up! :)

I know that u can change for each phone call, but can't change for text messages

Hi,

I had the same complaint with my Note 2 with it's original Android 4.1. I recently upgraded to 4.4.2 (Verizon) - it added the ability to assign a unique mms / sms alert sound from within the Contacts app. Why they didn't include using that same unique sound for email - is beyond me. I had an app called Universal Alerts that did all three - but it frequently crashed and consistently used more data then any other app on my phone - including the browser and the author was unresponsive.

The other mystery is who is responsible for the Contact app? Play Store says "not ours - try Samsung" - Samsung says the same thing. Coul it be Verizon? Be nice to have someone responsible when you have problems, or suggestions.
