Root CWM-Backup vs. Odin Re-Packer

Hi,

I am a total "Backup-Freak", I usually have like 4-5 backups of my Notebook, just in case one doesn't work. For the Prevail I do the same, constant backups.... ;) , I use Titanium Backup, OneClick Backup, as well as CWM-Backup and the Odin Re-Packer from, I believe, Kouma.

Can someone please clarify for me the difference between a CWM-Backup ( what is getting backed up ) and the Odin Repacker ( also what's getting backed up ) and which one is safer and better to use in case of a restore ( haven't done any restore with CWM and Odin Re-Packer ) !! The Odin Re-Packer creates 4 .tar files ( Boot / CSC / PDA / Phone ). Do all of them need to be put into the Odin Multi_Downloader in case of a restore ?

With cwm, it backs up the /system, /data, /cache, & /sdext (if present) partitions, the boot.img (kernel) and the .androidsecure folder on your sdcard (i think this is where the unlocker key info is stored, but not really sure)

The Odin packer backs up the /system & /data partitions, the baseband, the boot.img and the file system (at least that's what i think the cvc does)
*i might be missing something with the Odin packer, but iirc that's the extent of its backup ability.

both are perfectly safe, but one needs a pc while the other can be done on the go

It's a good idea to use them all, otherwise kouma wouldn't have designed it to make them ;)

Hope this answers your questions, but like i said, i might have missed a thing or 2 about the Odin packer, that's more kouma's department. :)
 
Cool, thx....... I anyway have all the backups on the Notebook anyway....... and the latest of CWM, Titanium and OneClick on the SD-Card as well. So I should be covered if something happen and I don't have my notebook close by. ;)
 
cwm backups are for on the go like LV said. odin packer is making an odin image of phone now. so when you mess up bad and are going to do a complete wipe and odin start over. you just do an odin of your backup. if you odin the regular way, you need to pick an image and then when done install a rom then install apps ect... , multiple processes. the odin packer is one shot done deal. you need to make an odin packer image whe you think your phone is running perfect though. that is how it was explained to me.
 
Ahhh great........ makes sense ! CWM Backup for all the little tests and switching ROM's and the Odin Re-Packer as a final backup once you found what you like !

Now the question is : Lets say I loose my phone and get a brand new phone and a brand new SD-Card.......... Would I just put the phone in "Download" mode and run the latest Odin Re-Packer Backup I have...... Or would I need to prepare the SD-Card first ( making sd-ext partition and format, etc. ) ?

odin will not partition your card. and i dont think it will restore your sdect either. (this is the part i was unsure of)

But, if you lost your phone, and got a new one. you woiuld just need to partition your card, install your odin image, and advanced restore your sext (cwm) and BAM back to where you left off
 
Well, I maybe did not say correctly what I want to achive ( or know the path of least resistance ) LOL
I am planning to get one of the 64GB/class 10 cards... But in order to to use Kouma's SDParter to set up multiple sd-ext and swap, I would need to Odin a baseband first and put a ROM on. Then, once the phone is booting up, I'd need to install the SDParter and create all the partitions. And then I probably could use the Odin Re-Packer backup I have to restore my previous working setup I had.

Just trying to avoid all thes steps. But I think I would need to have a Windows application ( or program ) which can create multiple sd-ext and swap partitions on a SD-Card and I am not aware of one that would do it ! Unless you guys know of one ????
 
the prevail only claims to support up to a 32gb card. though i did read that once partitioned, someone was successful in using a 64gb on this phone.

if you are just changing cards, just do THIS ;)

the only step i would add is to perform a factory reset after making the backup so that koumamod is set to its default (none) then the rom will already be installed, it will boot without the partition, you can create the partition(s) and restore your backup
 
I was reading that before, but I was just wondering about the Kouma data mode I have set up right now..... After doing backup and copy to PC and all, I'd turn off the phone, take the old SD-Card out, put the new 64GB card in, but would the phone even start up ???? I mean, in CWM, I only can create ONE sd-ext, but I would like to use the SDParter in order to create TWO sd-ext and a swap !!

LOL Shoot, I am already tired, I think I am confused and miss something here......... hahahaha
 
if you factory reset, it will "uncheck" the data mode and the phone should boot. if not, just partition it in cwm, so it will boot... then partition it as needed with sdparted.

note that if you change modes and then restore the backup you will probably bootloop

data mode puts the whole partition on the sdext
ssm (which is what im assuming you are interested in) puts /data/app on one partition and /data/dalvik on the other. restoring the backup will put the whole /data partition in your /data/app folder... and that would be bad.

so if you plan to switch modes, then you have to start over.
 
No, I do not want to switch modes. I am happy with the DATA mod, but in addition to the DATA mode ( I believe as far as I read kouma's post correctly ), I also can setup a swap partition ( swap file doesn't seem to work as well, but swap partition does ) and configure the swapping through the koumasettings.

Basically what I wanna do is :

1. Get a 64GB/class 10 SD-Card
2. Make or leave a FAT / sd-ext with 4GB / sd-ext with 2GB / swap with 2GB
3. Restore all my stuff like I have it right now
4. Configure the swap partition

BTW, do you know what kind of partition the "Swap" partition is, created by the SDParter app ?

if doing data then why need two sdext4?
 
Well, I think I read that some folks here do the setup FAT / sdext4 / sdext4 / swap, so just in case they wanna switch or use the extra partition for something else......

if you are staying with data mode, you only need two partition to do what you ask.(3 total [vfat|ext4|swap] ) the vfat one to hold your downloads, files, etc. the ext4 one to hold your data and the swap one for swap. the reason to make [vfat|ext4|ext4|swap] is so you can have ssm and swap. otherwise you are just going to waste the space taken up by the partition you arent using

that is so can switch to ssm later if want and with a card that big why not make the extra now i guess, and gonna be partitioning anyways, so go for it.
so if switch to ssm from data won't have to backup sd and then reload all folders and stuff.
 
I got one about SD cards. I was looking at a new card myself. Will the prevail take a uhs-1 card or only a class 10?
 
Thanks LV and cwhatever...... I think I have all the info I need...... Now trying to test and do some "partitioning" on the spare phone. ;)

The only last interesting thing would be to know what kind of partition the "swap partition" created by SDParter is ? Is it a FAT, ext3, ext4, etc....... ???

PS: After installing MiniTool Partition Wizard on my Notebook, I am pretty sure, the "Swap Partition" is a "Linux Swap Partition" !!!!! But that probably would need to be verified by someone !!! ;)
 
More specifically the sdsdqua-032g-a11a from newegg. Its a 32gb uhs-1enabled microsd. May go with another if its verified it will work. Also thinking with bigger faster sdcard ssm will be my new setup.
