CWM without changing kernel?

Thanks to this post http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-boost-mobile-all-things-root/711411-best-method-root.html I had my easiest rooting experience but all that method gives you is root access. Other rooting methods seem to require you to change the kernel and install CWM but my phone didn't seem to appreciate the kernel Do I have to replace the kernel just to get the bootloader changed?

On this phone Recovery is packaged with the kernel, and is not a stand alone thing. Also, recovery is not part of the boot loader. So the short answer is yes, you have to flash in a kernel packaged with custom recovery.
