Cyanogen becoming a business?

funkylogik

share the love peeps ;)
So theres been talk about it for a while and now they have a hardware OEM on-board http://androidauthority.com/cyanogen-oppo-n1-271502/
What does everyone think about Cyanogen Inc?
As a cultish type of person who hates what business did to music (hippy, punk, acid house, techno..) my gut instinct hates it a bit and my brain loves it but is it a good thing for the android community? Im completely on the fence tbh....

EDIT and how are google gona take this? Theyve threatened cyanogen before to block devices running CM o/s from downloading apps from Play when they stepped out of line and threatened them with legal action if they didnt stop including Google Apps in their roms...

I think it would be cool! :)
And what will Google be able to do about it? CM would be a legitimate business, Google wouldn't be able to shift their weight on them nearly as much.:D

Google objected to GApps being redistributed as part of third-party firmware/ROMs, but were happy to allow users to d/l and install GApps separately. All this changes is that CM will now be able to pony up the licence fee like Samsung, HTC et al and bake GApps into their 'product'.

But remember when CM suggested a split screen function, google spokeswoman hinted that if they persued it they could get the "device not compatible" message on CM running devices? That means google DO have the power to stunt innovation.
Also, will CM remain open source for the other dev teams to build from? I prefer hibrid roms.
Finally, will CM continue to support devices that the manufacturer/carrier have abandoned or will someone else have to take over that niche?

What advantages can anyone see from this (for us)?
Other than making it easier for the less tech-savvy to run CM and therefor (hopefully) get faster updates?
And will CM updates slow down now?
As i said, im on the fence. i never use CM as a daily driver but i have so much respect for how fast they can build a running base rom for other teams to build on :)

My opinions:
For devs it could make development easier and better with better collaboration

More widely available which would give more features

More leeway with Google via more funds and credibility

A device with higher security (via their encryption)

More funds for more features

They were founded on open source, and fought so hard, I doubt they will suddenly stop.

They talked about it in a Reddit AMA they did the day they announced. Basically for the foreseeable future the core Cyanogenmod project would be open source but they may develop some proprietary add-ons.

Also, their updates will come faster and faster, according to them, though the Manta (Nexus 10) Focal app needs SERIOUS help. I suspect it'll come soon, since it no logner gets a scant 5 frames per second.

I'm all for it, so long as they keep their principles. They're also bound by GPL.

I'm not really a fan of it. To me it just looks like they saw what Xaomi did with MIUI and felt like it should have been them.

I hope it leads to more AOSP options from manufacturers, but I dont really like that a community that was all about being open and sharing is now doing all of this proprietary software.

They've already had a falling out with the developer of focal since he wouldn't re-license his work, and its now been removed from current cm10.2 builds.

Focal is no longer a part of CM, so it wont be fixed, itll be removed

Whats GPL mate?
Tbh i havent tried the Focal app yet. Is it flashable on its own?
Im using Slimbean 4.3 on the s3 and just noticed today the camera is horrible when recording video! Is the camera usually a part of gapps or part of a rom?

GPL is the license for the linux kernel. Its the reason manufacturers (and developers) have to release kernel source

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html
http://source.android.com/source/licenses.html

But the kernel is really all that has to be kept open source, as android iteslf is NOT licensed under the GPL.

The camera is a part of the ROM, no relation to GAPPS :p

Cheers mate. I thought the camera was the stock aosp one but its much worse than ive had in any rom (and im a point n shoot typa guy) il try some other apps. I actually really liked the leaked moto x one

I bet it'll become something like Shenzhen Cyanogenmod Technology Co. Ltd., a division of Xiaomi or Daxian or Oppo or something. Then of course every knock-off between here and New York will have it.

I was wondering that the second I started reading, and you answered it.

I figured they couldn't totally close the mod as it would violate many 2nd and even 3rd party licenses like java.

I dont think photosphere is open source mate(?)
Wish it was. I have a zip file of the nexus4 camera/gallery but photosphere is the only thing that works on it so i have to have two cameras

Maybe that'll give the knock offs some extra value. I've seen lots of actually awesome knock offs with 2 gb ram 13 mp camera and 5 front for $200. That cheap because of the lack of name like Samsung etc.
