Root Cyanogenmod CM7

i much prefer the sense dialer but the killer for me was the crash when i tried to make a backup using clockwork. took me over an hour, i had to factory wipe then re-flash cm7. wouldnt let me restore my backup. gonna try mikshift now

Did you make a backup through ROM Manager or through recovery? I've never had any issue backing up anything, including CM7..

MikShift is a solid ROM, if I was going to use a Sense ROM as my daily it definitely be MikShift's Beta G.

i dont think i cleaned my system thoroughly before i flashed CM7 (yes, using clockwork mod) so i did a clean install of evervolv (a speedy, flashy ROM) but i couldnt stand the default font nor the lack of customization...so now back to a new install of CM7, on a freshly cleaned-and-pressed evo shift, and after a day, my only problems are the wifi radio always turning off and the 4g radio not working at times (or on the train :D). So far, for a n00b, call me impressed.

I'd love to hear any suggestions for improved battery life (besides juice defender)

Make sure you aren't running a task killer. Turn off your radios when you aren't using them (ie; wifi, 3g, bluetooth) I never found juice defender to be very helpful. Battery life with android is not it's strong point. I just make sure to not crack out on my phone unless there is a charger available. It is difficult, but I can do it...;)

Using an undervolted kernel with the "Smartass" governor seems to give me the best battery life. Just make sure if you flash a custom Kernel it's built for the same kernel version. I believe Cm stables are using 2.6.32 and the nightlies #90 and up are using kernel version 2.6.35..just make sure they match.
I'm running Kush's Shift Deck ROM (CM based) with x99's kernel and I'm getting pretty good battery life. With fairly heavy use, I'm getting 14 to 20 hours.

im afraid you're going to have to link me to a guide/manuel on kernels and kernel modding. i dont even know what that means (something to do with programming the cpu/ram)

the easiest way to get a new kernal on your setup is to download kernal manager from the market. it's a free download. open the app, select load kernal list and it will bring up a list of kernals that work on the shift. the list is broken down into 4 sections, name-author-android flavor-downloads. under "android flavor" make sure you select a kernal that says asop. the kernals will also have a description with them telling you what they do (such as overclock, underclock, undervolt, etc) i think the x99kernal-cm7 overclocks, underclocks, and undervolts.

find the kernal you want, select it, and the app will flash the kernal for you. and viola, you have a new kernal.

when you want to mess with the settings, to go menu-settings-cyanogenmod settings-performance-cpu settings

a warning will come up but just press ok. now you will be in the performance settings and able to mess with the speed settings. i just use the stock cm7 kernal and usually run mine at available governers :on demand,
min cpu: 245 mhz, max cpu: 1305 mhz
and it runs like a charm
