CyanogenMod to take Google out of Android - Microsoft investing

I feel like if M$ bought CM, Microsoft would just let Cyanogen make revamped windows phone or only do something with windows phone. That or make the next CM look like windows phone. Seems odd but that's what I'm really thinking right now...

Since Google's search income has dropped (Mozilla switched to Yahoo as default and loss reported by various financial news) and stores are putting out their own apps for shopping which bypass a browser, Google might just open up the store for a price and keep control. If all major stores do put out their own apps and use beacons for specials, sales, location services will be wanted by those shoppers. They already have the information. If the store apps are more profitable to the company, they could drop any financial support for location. It would be a blow to smaller merchants who cannot or do not get coverage except by snail mail flyers, but bottom line rules. I've seen changes in snail mail junk over the past couple of years. This again is speculation from financials, not tech.

As an aside, those local apps are a pain. They put out more alerts than a tornado warning. A friend has one from a TV station and it goes off every five minutes. Etiquette says talking or texting on phone at all times is rude, how about checking for bargains the minute the alert sounds?

I don't know how far they will get with fiber. Doing well right now, but it depends on how well paid congress gets to side with the cable companies about competition. We need more competition as entertainment goes to streaming.

I'm surprised they aren't working with Elon Musk and his communication satellites. If that works and gives areas where no fiber can or will run reasonably priced internet, it would probably get approval.
Since Musk owns Space X, he should be able to service.

Keep in mind that this isn't about MS purchasing CM as a whole. The information available only suggests that MS is one of several companies investing, and that they will only hold a minority interest in CM.

This is more about MS getting a foot in the door with Android rather than trying to extend Windows' reach.

I think. I'm just a guy on the Internet.

Says Kirt McMaster, CEO of CyanogenMod:
So, what do you all think of this?

Hmm lets see.

Google rom stock rooted;
1. remove all g***gle shit
2. disable all g***gle app shit
3. firewall outgoing *google*
4. reinsert root from the oh so fine rootkit from g-play and disable that crap
5. insert passwords you have to use, use them, change them, md5/salt them again becoz they got send at first use with the 'lets try and see if you entered the correct information to use this app' BS excuse.

Ms rom stock rooted;
1. remove all m****s shit
2. disable all m****s app shit
3. firewall outgoing *ms*
4. reinsert root from the oh so fine rootkit from ms-store and disable that crap

I see no difference.... other then I still don't trust anyone or anything and still have to go through a few hoops to get the OS how I want it.

I don't understand how CM is worth that much money. How do they monetize their product? It's basically a stock ROM that's no better than the hundreds of others out there that are free. They had a partner with OnePlus and couldn't make that work. Will the thousands of unpaid devs want to continue working on the ROM for free while a few con artists at the top are raking in the big bucks? Reminds me of one of those old dot com startups that got money thrown at them with no substance.

I [...] have to go through a few hoops to get the OS how I want it.

If those "hoops" involve removing "Google/Microsoft sh*t" then I suggest that you're choosing the wrong OS to begin with. :)

Right now this is nothing more than speculative investment; MS see which way the wind is blowing and are hedging their bets. If Android continues to grow they have a foot in the door (and a bigger finger in the pie). If the CM fork gains traction they have another finger in that pie... it's good business.

I think it will lead nowhere..... Cyanogen males a free product and has little if any money coming in, at some point their own little bubble will burst.

Same guy from the Micromax / OPO dustup - I have the same thought as the top comment there.

I'm amazed that people still call CM an AOSP rom - it's been it's own thing for a long while.

Where the CM community will go vs CM, Inc. should prove interesting.

As far as opening an app store and getting away from all Google services - ummm... OK.

Anything is possible in three to five years - including this guy self-destructing.
When this cm play app store open what apps will be used . be funny to have another on top of Brain app Google play and many more . love to see cm do the thing I hear the 70 million but now we need to know will they be making phones and if we can buy them will it be a dev version and please if Nokia is going to be sold can we please get quality and reliable devices .
