What you are probably seeing the charges for is data use. Smartphones use mobile data to perform many functions including sync'ing contacts and calendars, newsfeeds, email, polling widgets (weather is the most common that will use a lot of data). While individually each of these processes use only a small amount of data, it adds up quickly when you have a lot of services enabled.

If you are connected to Wifi, you should not be using any mobile data, but, if you have mobile data enabled, the second you loose the wifi connection it switches over to mobile. If you have powersaving enabled, wifi will go to sleep when the phone is in standby (locked screen) and that will revert to your mobile plane. If you want to control exactly when you use mobile data, put a widget on your desktop to toggle mobile data on and off.

thanks guys cn you please tell me how i would go about turning the mobile data of then as i dont need it as i use my wi fi connection all the time also how can i put a widget on my desktop for it just in case thanks again. also can i change my ring tone to a tone of my own or am i stuck with the inbuilt tones.

You can hold down your power button when the screen is on and check the" Data Network mode" you should see it say "data network mode deactivated" when it is disconnected

once again guys very helpful tried holding down the power button and seen the data network mode so i deactivated it by touching it. will this stay of now or will it turn by on at some stage by itsself cheers guys getting to like this phone just the calendar part to work out now as i have 200 odd events on my old genio mobile to transfer over one by one looks like

It will stay off even if you reboot the phone. You would have to manually turn it on again if you want data. But its a smartphone, why would you want it off all the time?

If you see a 3G/HSPA/2G/E icon in the notification bar, it means data is on. That's a good indication.

Cause it's charging 1 pound a day I believe, and he has wi-fi.

This is a relevant question though (albeit a n00b one, but I'm not a telecomms guy). If cbrjohn completely turns off 2G/3G/HSDPA etc, does that mean he can't receive texts/calls as well?

Without data, I think he won't be receiving MMS either.

As for turning off data. I just think that getting the smartphone, the idea is to have that data connection. Else you sort of cripple it. With wifi available, the data is not used anyway.

The possible issue is that the charges are daily and possibly fixed. So even if you don't use data, do you still get charged? If its charge as per use, then I don't see it being an issue. Get 3G Watchdog Pro to monitor the data usage.

thanks guys for all feed back just want to clear things up a bit . i still have 3g turned of and i am still receiving texts and calls. dont see the point of leaving this 3g service on if i am going to be charged

No app should charge you any $. Some need to pull information off the internet to work but as long as you have your WiFi on you will be ok. You will be able to get all text and calls but you will need data on for sending and receiving pictures (MMS) or videos.

Do you use Google Calender ? If you can get all your calender info to gmail then it will always sync to your phone. It is really easy and I find one of the best ways to sync your calender.
