Damage to Speaker Mesh

OZFive

Member
So I know there are a few others in my boat with damaged speaker mesh. It pushes in very easily and although I was being careful I did it myself.

My fault, my bad. Is a bummer.

I contacted blue rocket from GrapiXpressions to see if they would be able to make replacement speaker mesh and he said that is

I wish we could...but honestly I do not see a way we could do that at this point...if I come up with any ideas i'll be sure to let you know.

You can't get replacements thru Motorola?

I contacted Moto via web chat and got turned down...

Evelina A:Thanks for waiting OZFive, please note that Motorola stands behind our products by offering a one-year
warranty issued from the date of purchase. This warranty does not cover physical or liquid damage and is applicable to all the
phones that were manufactured for the US market. If your phone has physical damage, Motorola's National Service Center
charges a $75 flat rate repair fee. This price does not include shipping or your local taxes.
You may prefer to check with your carrier for insurance, replacement or exchange programs available with your plan or monthly
fee. You may also send the unit directly to Motorola where our technicians will make any necessary repair to ensure a properly
functioning unit. Our turnaround time at our National Service Center is 5-7 business days since we receive the unit at our
facility. If the phone is determined to have suffered physical or liquid damage, it will be shipped back to you unrepaired.
OZFive: I just need the part
OZFive: I do not want warranty repaitr
OZFive: I can do it myself
Evelina A: I understand, but we do not sell just parts
OZFive: if my battery door was damaged you would not sell me abother door?
Evelina A: Battery door and batteries are the only parts we have available

I understand she is low level customer service but she was trying to be helpful to the extent her position allowed. I did ask her to bump me up the chain and she has, i should be getting contacted by email soon.

Any ideas on how we can go about to another vendor, or ideas to get it replaced? Anyone else contacted Moto and had any success or other failures to get one?

Not my intention to turn this into a gripe session about the design or materials of the speaker mesh.

I just got a email from Moto asking what the issue is. I will be replying tonight and for sure let you know what response I get, good or bad. I will not let go of this till I get this replaced somehow.

Just wanted to said good for you for following up and being polite in the process. The world needs more OZFive's :)

I have the same problem. Stupid ass Motorola putting a damn sticker over the speakers instead of a real grille...pretty annoying.

This is my reply to Moto customer service....

I purchased a Motorola Droid recently and have really come to respect the quality and attention to design that your engineers put into making such a great phone. A major weak point has come to my attention though. The bronze mesh covering the rear facing speaker just under the battery door. I did notice when I got it that the mesh was a bit weak and a I made sure to look out for it and not do anything to jeopardize it's state. The other day I was not so watchful and I damaged it. This does not make the phone inoperable or difficult to use in any way, it is just a blemish on the appearance of the phone I would like to resolve. I chatted to your customer service rep Evelina A. (who was very polite, and tried to help me within the bounds of her position) but was unable to secure a replacement bronze mesh speaker screen for my phone. I am a pretty handy guy and would see no issue at all in applying a new mesh screen to replace the damaged one and I am sure many other people that have this issue would like to as well. I would like to purchase a new bronze mesh screen to replace my damaged one. This should not be an issue I hope and would like to know how much, and how I could go about getting one to make my Droid looks it's best again.

Thank you for your time and understanding,

I will let you know what comes of it.

I will let you know what comes of it.

i'd pay a few bucks for a fresh one. i hope they eventually allow us to purchase them, or maybe somebody needs to make their own and put it on ebay or something.

Well they are quick on their response. Although not the response I was looking for....
Dear Valued Customer,

Thanks for reaching out to Motorola. I have reviewed your e-mail and I am ready to help. I apologize for any issues that you are experiencing.

Our products come with a 1 year Repair Warranty from the date of purchase. Below I have provided two links that will explain more about the warranty and take you through the repair process. If your phone comes up out of warranty then you will need to provide a POP (Proof of Purchase) so we can update it based on that date. Please contact our web sales store at (866) 289-6686 for further assistance.

Best regards,
Latasha

Not ready to give up yet though I replied.....
Thank you for your prompt response although I am afraid a warranty repair or sending off my phone for any length of time is unacceptable. This is a small part, and can be easily replaced by most people as I would like to do. What I would like though is to have someone send me a new bronze metal speaker mesh so that I can replace this myself. I would pay for this of course, I cannot imagine it is an expensive part and would not need much in the way of shipping. I know from my inquiries on the internet that many people are in the same need of this replacement. Please understand that I appreciate that this can and would be replaced by you under warranty, it is nice to know I can count on you guys to back up your product. This though is not that kind of situation and I would like the part to replace myself. Think of this as a situation like a battery cover. I would not send my Droid to you to replace my battery door, I would purchase one from you and install it myself. Or you might think of this as a situation like a battery replacement. Apple who makes the immensely popular iPhone does not allow their customers to replace their battery, they make them send it in for Apple to do so and charge them. While this is happening the customer is deprived of their cell phone, which is most inconvenient of course. One of the things I can tell my iPhone friends is that I am trusted by Motorola to replace my own battery. I would now like to purchase a part that would make my Droid look it's best. I would like to know that a company that made this fantastic phone and trusts me enough to replace my own battery will also trust me to also replace a metal sticker on my phone. Please let me know how much a replacement bronze metal mesh speaker cover would be so that I might make my Droid look as good as it was before the damage.

The quest continues!

You wording is priceless!!

since seeing this thread its killing me not to poke at the speaker cover to see how flimsy it really is LOL

I had a similar problem and got almost the same response from motorola. I took a bit of chewing gum and was able to unbend it a bit, though it still looks messed up when looking closely I don't really care. Pretty silly flaw though in an otherwise well engineered phone.

There is a spot where it can get pushed in, like there is a gap behind it, you would have to push it just right though.

Not sure what happened with others, but before I got my battery cover replacement I bent mine with my finger pushing the cover back on. Not a big deal, it still makes phone calls, lol!

Just curious, how does that grille become damaged?

Its a sticker and it's edges are stuck to the phone on all sides except the bottom middle where the speaker is and there is no ledge that it can adhere to. So it just hangs off the edge and can be pushed down.

JUst a new email update from Motorola support. Do not get all excited it is not over yet. The link was not correct.

I was bummed out that it was not a working link but surprised that she did mention the product I was looking for (the bronze speaker mesh, and refered me to the store in the same instance. Could this mean they are going to start selling them as a standard replacement part through the Motorola Store?

My response...

Hello Latasha,

Thanks again for your continued attention to this issue. I was pleased to see the link to the Motorola Store but when I clicked the link it failed to bring me to the desired product (Replacement Bronze Speaker Mesh for the Motorola Droid), it brought me to

Cell Phones, Camera Phones, Unlocked Phones, Cell Phone Plans & More - Motorola.com - Motorola US

this was a re-direct to the main page of the Motorola store. I am heartened to see that this issue is getting the attention I hoped it would. Could you please resend a link to the page for the Bronze Speaker Mesh so I might complete the process and make my purchase.

Once again, thank you for your time and effort to help my fix this issue.

Looks like there is some possible resolution in sight, but we will continue on with this until I run up against a brick wall.

Then it will be time to get a sledge hammer.
