Damaged SD Card????

Well everything has been working just perfectly. I connected my phone to my computer this morning to tether it and it all worked fine. When I was finished I ejected it as usual and I got a notification that the SD Card is Damaged. The phone still works just fine except pictures, video's and music are all gone. It wants me to reformat the card and start over. As usual I don't have a recent back up of the card so I will loose all the stuff there including the Nandroid backups. That is what is truly scary right now. Any help out there to maybe get one more recovery of that card?

Yes I know, Back up back up back up but I'm stuck now..............

Thanks for your help in advance as usual............

Before you do anything Lisa, take the SD card out of your Hero, and try it on your PC and see if you can recover what is on it first, report back

Hi DonB........
Thank you for your response. I was keeping my fingers crossed with you advice and took the card out and put it in a reader but nothing. I kind of know what happened as I had a similar incident with my MP3 player a few months ago. Static electricity is what got my MP3 player when I disconnected it from the stereo in my shop. All was well with the Hero until I disconnected it from my laptop. It had to have been a static charge as the air is very dry here. So after repeated attempts to get that card up and running again I installed it back in the phone and just hit the format button. I was more worried that I didn't have a Nandroid if I needed one and I wanted to get that up and going just in case. I didn't loose anything on the SD card that dummy me should have had backed up. The only real loss was the pictures and videos but such is life. But the phone is up and running perfectly again and I just have to work on rebuilding my pictures and stuff as I can. I should have had a back up of the SD but didn't and you can bet I will from now on. Isn't that how it usually happens???

Anyway here is the next question. How do you discharge the static electricity in your body or hands before you touch the phone for disconnection?

I think that if I had a system for discharge of static I would have NOT lost my SD card data. But live and learn..............

Thanks again as usual for always running to my rescue with great advice. But this time I believe I know what happened.

I believe if you unmount both from the Phone first and then the PC you should be fine. Usually most umount from the phone and then simply unplug the USB plug, I would also unmount from the PC and a safety precaution, and yes I know you will make a back up will be made from how on.

Thanks for the advice DonB. I always get permission from the computer first before I unplug or dismount the phone. I plug in to my computer regularly to do file house keeping on the phone SD card and this was the first time. As I had mentioned I know it was Static that got to me. I experienced the same thing once on my MP3 player out in my shop so I know this danger exists. But the real lesson here for me and everyone else is to back up the phone. I actually had about 80% of my pictures and files on a couple of other computers and I look at this incident as a good chance for some house cleaning.

What really had me worried the most was the loss of my Nandroid. I didn't sleep very well until I did a Nandroid backup and had that again. Then I was okay to play with the phone. But now I have that AND all the SD card stuff on a laptop. What's really fun is to have the ability to rebuild the phone. A year ago you guys were holding my hand getting me through rooting and the associated problems I had then. While I claim to be NO EXPERT I have a real good idea how to keep myself out of trouble. Back up the SD and have a Nandroid not only one the phone but a solid one on your computer. Just in case....................

Have a great day and thank you...............
